Cable modem for $30

Should I go for it?

It'd save me $36/year. But I like knowing that if my rented SB5100 breaks, Comcast will replace it free of charge.

I pay $3 per month to rent a modem from Comcast. If I bought a modem, I'd be paying $0 per month to rent from Comcast.

My service is $20/mo. for the next 9 months. Comcast has great retention plans. 🙂

I was looking at comcast for a new location and they want $65/mo!
I've been a Comcast customer for 4 years, and I called 'em up one day ready to make a switch to DSL + DirecTV. The rep offered me digital cable + high speed internet for $70/mo. I bit. 🙂

The advantage to owning your own modem is not paying $3.00/mo. to rent one.

This would be a better choice, and is on sale occasionally at retail stores.
It usually only goes on sale with rebates that require activation. 🙁

Occasionally with activation, occassionally not. Very cyclical.

Believe Circuit City runs a sale/rebate without activation from time to time for ~ $40.

I pay 50$ a month for cable modem thats been my standard price for the past mmm 5 years!!!!
i dont own the cable modem but i dont remember how much less i would pay if i bought one and return the one they gave me. I have Optimum online.

here is a little tip .

Comcast and alot of the bigger places are really going nuts with the premier package speeds. the motorola 5100 and lower have shown signifigant issues being able to run those speeds right now the only Moto Cable modem that i know of that works 100% is the 5120.
DSL Reports is riddled with users who have speed issues when using the 5100 and lower.

so anything that actually says its capable of handling speeds of 42meg down and 10meg up hell yes

D-link has been known for low priced decent products and id say go for it. ive never had any bad luck with their stuff plus its docsis 2.0 compliant... which i dont know of any ISP's that are actually running 2.0 cuz of the cost of equipment upgrades but its still nice to have.

go for it man especially with a 30 dollar rebate.

Yea I found the 5120 on BestBuy.com for $80

A bit much though, I wonder how big the difference is between the 5100 and the 5120

Compare the price you buy it for to the price of renting it, and see how many months it'll take to match.

If your bought modem lasts twice that long, that's effectively one "free" replacement by the cable company.

Anything after that is profit.

If you're a heavy Internet user like myself, be sure you test the modem for quality and reliability. My very first cablemodem was a Linksys v1.0 and it handled my usage pretty well. I had no disconnect issues and everything was grand. When they released the 2.0 version, I could never use it to the max capacity without it resetting on me. The cable light would just go black and I'd have to unplug/plug the unit to get it to work again. Very very frustrating! The Motorola SB5100 also could not handle the Internet usage and would just kind of lock up and surfing was shaky then. The modem I have now is a Toshiba PCX2600 and I absolutely love the thing to death! It never disconnects no matter how much traffic I create. I have ran as many as 12 BitTorrents without issues. Running only one BT before would crash both of the SB5100 and v2 Linksys.

I was talking to a friend of mine and he did some analyzing and he came up with the conclusion that the modems couldn't handle so many open connections as the Toshiba and Linksys v1. He was thinking the routing table got full or the processors inside just simply couldn't handle the traffic. When we run LAN parties (70-150 people), we use my modem!

Cliff Notes: make sure your modem can handle the Internet traffic you make!
