cable modem connection

i dont have a hub, have just 2 computers, is it possible to hook up a cable modem to 1 computer using its ethernet port, and to another using the usb, or am i going to have to buy a hub?

I think it's possible (not sure), but if you do, you'll always have to keep the computer connected to the web on, even if you're only using the other one. Get a hub, or better yet, a router, and you'll be able to use the machines independently.

They're cheap. If you live in a city with a Fry's Electronics one of your machines is a laptop, they have a wireless router for $20. I don't know about this model, but many wireless routers also allow wired connections, and it will give you some idea of how inexpensive it is to do it right. 🙂

with a router, you just hook up the modem to the routher, then each computer to the router and they can run independently, thats how it works? if i just bought a router, not a wireless one, i'd need 3 ethernet cables right?

Yep. Go through the setup program that comes with the router to get it online with your DSL or cable company, the same as setting up an individual connection the first time. Then, any machine that plugs into the router will automatically recognize it.
