Cable modem and wireless access point

I'm trying to setup wireless network.
Can I connect my cable modem directly to wap or do I have to install router.
I will never need wired set so not sure if router necessary.

No need for a router if you only have one computer connecting. OTOH, if you have multiple wireless computers, you'll need a NAT layer to allow multiple connections to a single public IP address. That will require the router.

Setting up 3 computers on wireless network.
So each will need onw IP address, got it.
