Cable Internet - Signal dropped dramatically

Yesterday my upload and download signals were 40 dB, today they are 10-20 dB down and 8 dB up. I didn't change a thing. I do live in an apartment on the top floor. What could be the problem? The only thing I can think is that someone installed a splitter at the drop or there is some shady cabling in the walls to get cable to each apartment. I myself don't use any splitters, so I'm at a loss. I called Motorola and they said it was a signal issue. Comcast says it is a modem issue. Considering it is brand new and the wireless and wired switch works fine, I'm thinking its a signal issue.

What modem model do you have, what are your provision rates and what do the modem logs show? I'm also on comcast and over at dslreports in the comcast forum many of us have been complaining about intermittent service from comcast over the last few weeks.

I have an SBG940, signed up for 8MB service. I was getting it on tuesday, speakeasy showed 9436/1528. But now my signals are all out of whack

Downstream: SNR 10-20 dB with -19dBmV power level (should be SNR >25 dB and power between -15 and 15) on tuesday it was 40 dB and 0.7 dbmV

Upstream: 8.3 dBmV (should be >30 dBmV) on tuesday it was 37 dBmV

The logs show something about a FEC frame error and QSK/QAM errors, but they are a little strange as the date shows 1970.

I'd call comcast and ask them to check the line and if you've made any changes like adding a splitter I'd remove it. Sounds like something has gone awry with either your line or perhaps the node has a problem. Your snr should be at least 35+. Have you had any heavy weather or rains where you live recently?

Sure enough, the tech who was activating cable on tuesday turned of the incoming tap and didn't turn it back on. Back in business.
