Hi:
can someone help me understand?
1) On comcast site states download files ups to twice as fast as 640K DSAL i.e. 1280K but DELL site states 1.5MB for comcast. which one is correct?
2) I am planning to buy a cable modem. which one should I buy?
LINKSYS befcmu10 spec for modem speed is "supports maximum data over cable service interface specification); but MOTOROLA SB5100 spec for modem speed "Up to 38Mbps dowstream, 10 Mpbs upstream"
Which modem is better?
Thanks for the help. Please send my your opinions.

I use Comcast

It is 1.5 down and 256 up. I get higher speeds, 1.7 down - 200 + download speed

Don't worry about the modem, Cable internet will never be 38Mb down and 10Mb up (Marketing)

the best way to go is to "buy" the modem from BB or CC. It is free AR with new activation. Why pay rental when you can own it.

It is $3.00 rental but if I get rebate from Dell I thought it is better to have my own modem.
You know when they are phasing out?
I was not sure if Linksys BEFCMU10 ($99-30 rebate=$69) is better than
Motorla's SB5100 ($79-$20 rebate=$59) ?
Thanks

I've owned the Linksys, and the Moto's predecessor(the 4200), and if the 5100 is like the 4200, I would reccomend that over the Linksys. I've had BitTorrent issues with the Linksys, among other things, whereas the Moto works fine.

$3.00 per month.....

If it breaks... THEY replace it.... if they obsolete it.... THEY replace it....

Cable modems are pretty much like NICs...... It just doesn't matter that much.... what Comcast gives you will work.

PS: DON'T load any comcast software... it's useless! WindowsXP will take care of you plug & play.

yer gonna love it!

All correct, AR is After Rebate

Earthlink broadband by Time Warner, now Bright House networks, gives a cable modem free. You get same rates with a modem and without a modem.
