Cable/DSL router vs. gaming performance

Hello,

I finally got my cable i-net connection (Comcast) and it's awesome! Now I want to get my 2nd PC in the same room on, so I'm going the wired ethernet method. During my research, I read a review where the person gave a bad rating due to poor online gaming performance. Is this a legitimate complaint? If so, what is the best Cable/DSL router for gaming? I'm running 98SE. Thanks for any advice.

Most routers won't hurt your gaming performance at all (atleast noticibly)

Which router were you reading about, maybe somebody here has the same router and could tell you their review of it.

The reviewer could possible have just picked a bad day for his ISP and they were having network difficulties, or he could have possibly joined a bad server.

The router has nothing to do with it. The latency from a single router is always < 1ms.

I seem to lose about 5ms ping plus it's one extra hop. but no big deal.

Thanks for the info, guys. I think the router in question was the D-link 604. The comment was not from the reviewer himself but from someone who read the review and had that comment. So I bet the theory that that guy's ISP was having a problem at the time he checked or his settings were not right etc. is the correct one. I can sure deal with an additional 5mS, heh.

I game on my wireless laptop ocasionally. Whats so bad about it? Sure my ping isn't quite as low as it is on my desktop with a ethernet card, but its a difference of 5-10ms, not 100-200ms. Its fine.

Of course the original poster said he ws going with a wired ethernet, so why even bring this up to begin with?

that only applies if your gaming on a lan.
