If it's digital service, then they know. Put presumably the OP would have turned in his cable box when the service was canceled.

The idiotic phone company did that to me once. I lived with a friend and had my own phone line. I moved and cancelled service. They didn't turn the phone off and 8 months later I get a call from a collection agency. I called and argued with the phone company and once I asked them to check the phone log for usage they realized I had not used the phone since the day I left.....which was during bill cycle I had paid for. It was a mess but I got it resolved. You may have more trouble since the cable company has no way of telling if you actually used the service.

I had a similar problem with AOL on this exact same issue. Took taking to BBB and asking a lawyer friend to write a letter for me.

I had AOL Tried canceling online and they would not let me cancel on their online support said I had to call. I called waited on hold for 2 hours, tried calling the next day waited on hold for 1 hour and same with the next day. Finally after reading their site, it said I could fax cancelation requests to a special fax number. I did that, stop using it, they stop billing me.

3 months later they billed me $90. I called the special billing # and they told me thats because they didn't charge me the last 3 months, and had no record of my cancelation and would not let me get a refund, even though the records showed I hadn't used it.

After speaking with 3 higher ups I went to the BBB, they got the response that AOL would cut the bill down to $45. That wasn't acceptable I had to get a friend to write a letter to get them to discount the other $45.

It wasn't digital cable. It was standard VH1 and MTV type subscription.

F-That ... you cancelled it and that should therefore invalidate your contract with the cable company. it's not your fault they screwed up, so you shouldn't pay for it.

i would tell them to fvck off and not give them a dime, regardless if they know you used it or not.

Then you should pay for it. Cable company is right.

No, the holier than thou crowd is growing on here.

If he or roomy called in and canceled it and it stopped showing up on their bill, that's proof that it was "canceled" by the company but THEY FAILED to disconnect the service. At that point, if it is connected to his residence he can use it. It is the cable company that failed to render their services effectively. They are just trying to get some $$$ out of you by strong arming you. Tell them you won't pay and if they put it on your credit you'll sue. That will stop them from doing anything. Especially if they cut of the service you were paying for, for no reason other than being vendictive.

So the cable is always on, and they start charging you the moment you plug it in?
Sounds like they knew exactly what they were doing when they stopped billing but not the service.

It also sounds like they are playing your fears. Hoping they are right.
They detected several months of activity but just recently decided to bill you?
BS. I say the guy "finally" came out to disconnect your cable and discovered it was being used.

They can't charge you, period. It does NOT matter if they disconnected you for non-payment of services, or if you called them to disconnect. THEY KNEW it should have been disconnected in the past, and you are not responsible for any charges thereafter.

I can't believe the cable company would even try to charge you.

Logic not found... that is a dumb thing to say. The mistake was theirs, not his. If they can't be bothered to do their job, why should he have to?

I wonder if there is anything in writing that makes sure we have to make sure they actually turn it off in order to not be liable.

I agree. But that wont get his services back on.
You might want to go with another internet provider.

Stealing cable is a federal crime. Good luck.

It's pretty clear cut. You stole cable service and they caught you.

again HBO does not mean you have digital. actually none of the channels (unless digital only).

with digital you need a box and have a really neat online schedule.

I doubt they know whether he used it or not. I mean, people steal cable all the time and are usually only caught when a technician sees the illegal connection outside.
