Cable Company Didn't Turn Off My Cable

So one of my housemates called in to cancel our cable TV service, but to keep our cable internet a long time ago. They never turned it off but stopped charging us and we just left it at that. Now they realized what they did and want us to pay them back for all the months we had "free" cable. My housemate told them no and now they shut off everything. Who's really to blame here? I think that it was their responsibility to shut off service if we requested it. Others say that it was our responsibility to make sure they shut it off.

Do you have a confirmation number of when you called in to cancel?

You could always plead ignorance and say you disconnected the TV when you called to cancel, and had NO IDEA the cable was still on.

did you get it in writing? did you request cancellation of service in writing or just a phone call?
if he just called, there is likely no record

you may be doomed

but IF you have a confermation number then thats all they got. but how did they know you were useing it?

hmm it depends on how they know you were useing it. if its just because they forgot to turn it off well then to fvcking bad for them. but if they have proof you are screwed heh

The idiotic phone company did that to me once. I lived with a friend and had my own phone line. I moved and cancelled service. They didn't turn the phone off and 8 months later I get a call from a collection agency. I called and argued with the phone company and once I asked them to check the phone log for usage they realized I had not used the phone since the day I left.....which was during bill cycle I had paid for. It was a mess but I got it resolved. You may have more trouble since the cable company has no way of telling if you actually used the service.

Ok. If you called them, cancelled, got your cancellation number, and they want you to pay for anything they did not do, you tell them no.
Because they cannot prove you used that cable tv.
Just tell them you never watched it from the moment you cancelled and you are not going to pay for it.
Don't ever admit to them that you watched it at all. Because they record that stuff.

Assuming they called, and cable company stopped billing, they would HAVE to have something on record as to WHY they decided to stop billing. They don't just do that on their own accord.

The cable company has no idea if you've been using your TV service. Internet, yes. But not TV.

I agree. It's their mistake and now they want you to pay for it.
I know you admitted you have watched the cable tv since then, but what if you had not watched it?
They would probably still be coming after you.
