Cable cap on download?

My cable co (Charter) offers 5 plans the lowest being 128 up and 128 down for $25.00 free install, internal modem free first month and if I recommend them I get $25.00.===== Dialup here is $29.00.

what is the highest package you can get through charter?

Ouch, that's got to suck. I'm sure glad I went with DSL I'm always getting 150kb/sec downloads (as long as the server I'm downlaoding from can support that much)

My parents have Charter in Nebraska, and they have tiers (128, 384, 768, 1.5). I thought it was some podunk offer from a hillbilly area. Sounds like they are pioneers in what's to come. Cable internet might get real expensive soon. We're gonna look back on these days like we look back on the days of "$20 off $25" online coupons. Remember those? The good ol' days.

It all depends on the cap and how much it costs if you exceed. If it affects the top 5% of bandwidth hogs, then all power to them. If it affects more, then I'll be more inclined to be irritated.

Wait and see before you get upset. Personally, my AT&T cable modem performs beyond my expectations and they would have to upset me a lot before I'd consider switching to the slower/more expensive DSL options that I have locally. The 128kb upload bandwidth cap barely affected me. Similarly, the 1.5Mb download cap is something that barely ever affects me. If they capped my downloads per month to 50GB, it wouldn't affect me at all. If they capped me at 10GB per month, I'd be more upset. But it also depends on the charge if you exceed it.

Still, wait and see the details.

Does it only cap downloads, or bandwidth too? My Zone Alarm says that in the past 24 hours, I've received 92MB from the web. Temp internet files, I assume.

And does this charge people for exceeding a download limit, or are companies going to charge for service tiers? Or both?

Realisticly, I would hope they have the brains not to cap it below 17.303466796875GB. That's how much data a 56K modem(running at full 56K 24/7) over 30 days. For ~2x the price, you should be able to at least pull more data than a puny little 56K modem, as most ISPs wouldn't mind a 24/7 modem user.

Comcast (after switching from @home) capped at 1500 Down. I think it is lower though since before the switch I got 2.5Mbps, so the line can handle it.

I know @home used to reccomend caps at 128Kbps up, but I was never capped on the up until Comcast had to put in their own network.


I wish I still had the level of service I had when I first signed up 2 years ago... I was getting 5-8Mbps on most days.

Right now my ISP (rogers high speed) has my cable capped at 300k down and 40~45K up. If they do anything to that cap it better increase the upload cap cause it takes forever to upload files.
