My little brother got a cable box and he gets all of the channels (analog) from Cox. Without it, we just have the basic channels, without premiums or anything like that. Is this box illegal? I checked google and I read that cable boxes are legal as long as you inform your cable provider that you have one. Also, cable companies won't be able to tell you have one, which is why they want you to report if you have one. How does this cable box thing work? Is it illegal? Where in the world did my little brother (he's only 15) get one of these things? Should I tell him to give it back?

If you are getting the service without paying for it, then it is illegal. Why don't you call the cable company and tell them you have it. I am sure they would love to hear it.

I know a couple of 15 year olds who could build one from scratch probably. He (if he exists) could buy it from the back page of Popular Science.

Is it illegal ?

Okay.

Crantang has her own cable, thankyouverymuch!

Little bro borrowed it from a friend to watch the Tyson fight and never returned it (sucks for his buddy, I guess). I asked him if he knew if it were legal or not, and he said, "Uh... I dunno." Okay whatever.

I just want to find out if he should have it, because I don't want the po-po coming to my house to cart my parents off to jail because their stinky little kid wanted to watch big guys hit each other.

Okay?
Okay.

Urban legend: one of the guys I work with used to work for COX and that was the biggest "scare people rumor" they had. They can not cook your cable box. You think any business would risk sending a spike big enough to damage electronics down its lines to get a illegal cable box and HOPE they don't blow up someone's TV? How many people on here have TV's that cost over 2k? I know I do, as well as many of the others on here.

Why wouldn't they? I mean, it's the US after all, not like people could sue them succesfully over destroying their property, could they? ;)

Why not? DTV did something like this to illegal cards.

Are you a full time thief, or do you just post crap like this as an employment project for cops? It's assholes like you that add to the price the rest of us pay. :|

Illegal cards are one thing but cable boxes is a whole different balls game. I don't think the cable company could hit analog cable boxes. I am sure they could hit digital ones.

AND DTV doesn't send a spike to hit the illegal cards. The cards are just programs written in ASM with ans ASIC. The just take advantage of the fact that the cards just modify code on the card to get the chanels. They just munipulate the code to kill it.

Hey narzy, can I by my own digital cable boxes so I don't have to be ripped off $10 a month for "renting" them from AT&T. I want to get digital, but I refuse to pay $10 a month for each tv, plus I am poor.

Edit: I don't mean steal it, I mean to buy the digital service and purcahse my own boxes (like DirectTV as opposed to Primestar)

If I am not mistaken, they cost around $299. That with the fact that the technology is not that old, it means they could upgrade at any time. That means you could be stuck with a $299 paper weight. Of course I have no idea since I only have analog cable here which sucks and is a rip off.

It's not worth buying the digital boxes, because they are so expensive, it would be better to just rent them. The cable company does occasionly send bullets or whatever you want to call them through the cable boxes to destroy the illegial ones.

They try not to do them too much because they end up destroying some of their own. Theres no way the cable company is going to be finding out about it if you have the box. Satelite and cable are different though, and the companies do different things but both of them can stop you from viewing it. If a cable company wanted to, they could stop you from viewing the channels illegially, but it would probably cost them more money than they can make.

Anyone can get the cable boxes. They are available on magazines as well as on internet sites. Certain auction sites have them also. If I was you, I would tell your brother to give it back because it is not his, it is his friends. If you have no problem with having one thats up to you, odds are you aren't going to get caught unless you do something stupid like invite the whole neighborhood and tell the cable company that you are watching channels you aren't paying for. So if it's your brothers friend's box tell him to give it back to his friend, because you can't take from a friend thats just wrong.

you are right. i am an undercover cop and i am arresting your sorry ass for being a whiny bitch. i never anywhere mentioned if i stole cable which i dont. I was simply replying to the original poster who was overly worried about the box and i was just telling him what I would do.

It wasn't too long ago that a guy in mass. was fined 50K, for having these things in his house.

You can rent a lot of movies for $50,000....

Granted, the guy was probably being made an example of...but who wants to risk it?
