I live in SoCal, but I want to get to a Cabin that is at or near 10,000 feet for the weekend. Are there any options in central california? I'm willing to drive the distance, but would like to know if I have any real options at all?

You MIGHT find something. Tahoe is at about 6250', Kirkwood is around 7800.

It'll take some research on your part...and some luck finding one available.

That's going to be tough to find as the tallest mountains in california are only about 14k. Colorado would be the place to go as some of there ski resorts are at that high of elevation.

Get a topo map and find the 10K line. then identify towns above that line and start asking around

pretty sure Leadville CO is the only perm settled town over 10k so that might not help him

This is true.

There is also a problem for some people and apparently mainly women.

A few years ago when my wife and I stayed there with a couple both ladies had such a hard time breathing we had could not stay the whole night and had to come down in altitude so the women could breathe.

This. I spent some time at there altitudes when I was in the military and in superb shape, and even at rest heart rate still felt like I just ran up five flights of stairs.

Bumping it for the day crowd. I may just have to settle for Big Bear at 7K if driving up to NorCal is only going to net me about 1K extra.

I did Whitney in the summer and that was an incredible feeling. I'll be hiking around Mt Salkantay soon which will bring me to just over 15k feet.. and just before I fly down(quite literally the several days before I fly out) I wanted to start the acclimation process by spending some time up high.

Near Whitney there were campgrounds at 10,000 feet, but I didn't want to actually camp. I just wanted to "live/exist" at high elevation lol.

If you want a cabin at 10,000 feet, buy a Cessna.

10k isn't that bad once you get used to it, but you feel like a god when you go back to lower elevations and start running.
