what do you really think raising it will accomplish?

its not governments place to legislate on this sht

Now all the people who are unhealthy and cost the government money because we feel we should be socialist when it comes to healthcare, will be paying a little bit more towards the cost.

Think of how many hundreds of millions of productive hours are wasted in this country every year by assholes reading internet forums and making comments about how the things they dislike should be taxed into oblivion. If people were heavily taxed for their time online, they'd quit spending so much time at it, and could do something productive like get another job, so the government could collect income tax on it. That would be an amazing boost to the economy!

:thumbsup::D

Brilliant idea! Can we also create a "eyesore tax" for poorly designed web sites? The US could make billions off of Myspace and Geocities alone. Think of all the evil terrorist harboring countries we could invade with that money! :D

We care a lot
about disasters, fires, floods and killer bees
about Los Angeles falling in the sea
about starvation and the food that Live Aid bought
about disease, baby, Rock Hudson, Rock...Yeah!

We care a lot
about the gamblers and the pushers and the freaks
about the people who live off the street
about the welfare of all the boys and girls
about you people cause we're out to save the world

Yeah!

And it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it!

We care a lot
about the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines
about the NY, SF, and LAPD
about you people, about your guns
about the wars you're fighting
gee, that looks like fun

We care a lot
about the Cabbage Patch, The Smurfs, and DMC
about Madonna and we cop for Mr.T
about the little things, the bigger things we top
about you people, yeah, you bet we care a lot

And it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it....

What is so terribly offensive about cigarettes? Some people act like they are evil incarnate.

I'm an ex-smoker, and I still don't get the hatred. Can't we leave people be?

As I have already alluded to several times in this thread, it has nothing to do with smoking and everything with not letting people be. Fascists need pariahs. If it wasn't smokers, they'd find another group to hate on.

There was a "study" recently released that supported this claim. I heard it while listening to talk radio. No, I will not take the time to search and post it.

Holy smokes! Good thing I'm no full-time smoker. I only use'em when I really need'em (prior to cramming for tests, helps my stay more focused, longer). Besides, I can pretty much quit when I want to w/o the aid of those patches or gums...

If local governments can fine citizens for not keeping their properties up to code, I see no reason it couldn't happen online. Let's do it.

Yes, because your lack of independance and responsiblity makes it impossible for you to actually accomplish things for yourself.

Please government, control my life - charge me more taxes so I can do the things I want to do but can't without your superiour help.

I used to work in a restaurant in Virginia where the majority of the employees and a large percentage of the bar crowd smoked and found it difficult to quit smoking. Since moving to California I find it much easier to not smoke since im not around smokers anymore.

Well good for you, I'm so happy that you - and so many other utterly helpless people were able to quit smoking through the overly superior government that the state of California possesses. If only every state legislature could be so insightful.

Personally, I'm going to lobby for some tire taxes. Sure, ciggerettes are dangerous to a lot of people - but driving kills a lot more people every year. Hell, people should even institute some consumer tracking for these things. If someone seems to be a heavy drinker, and buys tires in the same month that frequent bar trips are made - a new "likelyhood of driving after drinking" tax should be instituted. Why don't we just tax anything that might cause cancer? New $10.00 breathing tax anybody?

I wonder if the folks who defend this by saying the people voted for it (and therefore it's OK) will feel the same way in ten or twenty years when the same justification could be used to make Spanish the official language of California. Some things are anti-freedom, and ought not to be decided by popular vote.

It's a dangerous game to to try to alter behavior by taxation, because the momentum will always keep driving those punishment taxes towards the next thing... alcohol, gas-guzzling vehicles, homes that consume "too much" electricity or water.

That tax is grossly unfair and irresponsible.

They should tax food more - that way fat people pay more taxes to support their angioplasties.

They should tax gas WAY more - that way Californians can start getting over their obsession with cars

They should tax coffee at $1 per cup - that way coffee addicts can prop up the bloated bureaucracy

I can't begin to imagine the outrage if any of those taxes were put before the legislature...

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with this tax, if in turn, they taxed all the fvcking idiots that voted for it by the same amount. We'll call it a "fvck my neighbor" tax. At the end of the year, we take the average extra amount paid by taxes by per smoker and charge it to each individual that voted for it.

I actually quit smoking in Virginia at the start of my 3000 mile road trip. I just find it easier to not want to smoke now that people around me are not smoking.

The simple fact is, that was a lifestyle choice that you made in your former job and place of residence.

It could've just of easily been obtained by removing yourself from the job and staying where you live.

LOL, not being around smokers had no part in my move to the west coast but

80 degree temperatures in the summer with low humidity and living 3 miles from the beach and having a pool open 365 days a year did
