Eh, I think it's kinda unfair, just one year prior to them didn't have to take it at all and now all of a sudden they're forcing it on the kids, therefore the teachers don't have time to teach this worthless test as well, not to mention those stupid "Star tests" that everykid has to take now... It's all about testing, no time for learning..

er...i thought testing was used to find out how much you learned?

And the test is about what they've learned since grade school, not some new topic.

And its stupid to call this discrimination. Math is universal and has nothing to do with race, religion, gender or socioeconomic status.

I was thinking the same exact thing, now if she ddn't pass english, i'd understand, but no way should you ever go through 13 years of school and not pass math. How hard could the test have possibly been?

The only way I see she could sue and win for failing the test is if she is truly mentaly retarded.
I don't think that is a path she wants to go down either.

The CAT/6 aka the Star Test provides valuable information for the State, so it is needed. The HSEE helps make sure kids who graudate actually deserve their diploma.

That it might, the real problem lies in that teachers simply teach kids how to pass the test not teach any sort of useable knowledge.

Heh, yeah. Don't they usually complain that the verbal parts of standardized tests are discriminatory? How can the math be? Unless their complaint is that minorities don't have access to adequate education, but then shouldn't they have been suing before this test came up? 😉

We have something similar in Ontario.

We also lost a grade in high school (students graduate after grade 12, not grade 13), but nobody's suing.

Passed the english but failed the math? She can't even use immigration as an excuse, she's just plain stupid. I dont even think they teach algebra in college do they?

They do in Community College and some Universities.

This I don't get. The state defines what the test will cover. The state can make that as broad as they'd like. As long as the school just gives the teachers schools a broad range of topics the test will cover and not specific question types, there's no way a teacher could teach for the test.

yeap. My wife was a teacher. They are instructed to make sure the kids pass the standardized test. Considering a good portion of the schools funding is linked to the test the school wants as many to pass as possible.

With new laws Teachers pay and job are tied to how well they do on the test. So i wouldn't be surprised to see more stories where teachers just teach what is on the test. You think education is bad now? just wait.

Well, if the test is anything like the exit test I had to take in high shcool then they really should've learned most of that information. Mine was so basic most people finished in under an hour when the school had blocked out 3 hours for the test.

Society has set it's standards to "get-something-for-nothing." Thankfully to the hardworking leaders, they set the bar to help make sure that the country doesn't eat out of terrible cereal bowls. But the second someone like this sad child comes into a leadership position, is when we see more people suffering.

I was an experimental pig the first year they came out with the high school exit exam for CA. Yes I took it and I thought it was a joke. But I noticed some ppl didn't even try and just failed it.

Now I come from a school that's 60% Asian, and so the majority of us just passed it fine and we thought it was a joke. I did hear over the news how there was "hard algebra" (ok seriously, they had SIMPLE algebra) and they were planning on removing it because too many people were failing this test.

Seriously, if you fail this test, I swear you're retarded by my standards. But I can see how it's possible. As a tutor at a middle school in Oakland, I don't know what the hell kids are learning these days. I remember having the multiplication tables beaten into me and stuff like that, but I swear I knew a lot more at 4th grade than many of these kids do at 6th - 7th grade. If you sue for discrimination, you seriously are just a disgrace. If you learned in school, you should be passing these at freshman year in high school with FLYING COLORS.

I hope some hardass judge takes this case. The trial would be awesome.
Prosecution "I was discriminated against, I'm entitled .... bla bla bla bla bla bla .... "
Judge "D.I.A.F"

Stupid people always blame others for their failures.

Welcome to America....land of the free and home of the brave...

It's about time we started holding [people] accountable for their education. Life isn't a free ride.

Self-responsibility would go a long way, but it's easier not to...for obvious reasons, as its always someone elses fault.
