Many people lease the C5's and rag the out pretty hard.

I've seen some 24 month off lease ones that rattle, dont drive straight, and much weaker than a brand new one.

Keep in mind , a properly treated and handled car should perform BETTER than a brand new one, due to tolerances of the motor etc.

I'd like to see a 2001 M3, 2001 Carrera 2, 2001 C5, and 2001 Viper GTS after 24 months to see which held up better (each driven under the same set up circumstances, driver habit, etc.) in these key areas:

1) Interior: how well did it hold up. Are there loose trim pieces, worn leather, etc.
2) Structural soundness: are there any rattles, squeaks, etc.

IMHO, I'd put $300 on the Carrera and the M3 to come through unscathed.

<< Well, it's a known fact that the C4 Vettes weren't the best built or reliable cars around during their day. The question is, did Dave and his team do double back-flips to make the C5 better >>

Dave Hill only became cheif Corvette engineer mid-way through the C5's initial bubble-up design phase. Mclellum (sp?) was the cheif engineer for the Corvette for the C4 car. Dave Hill was working on Cadillac at that time.

Dave Hill did an amazing job on the C5..

I imagine the 'Vette would do quite well in terms of its basic mechanics (i.e., maintaining compression etc.), but would fare considerably worse in the areas you describe. In particular, from what I have seen the fiberglass body is problematic in terms of resisting rattliness and squeaks.

We have had a few vettes in our family and never really had any problems with them. The first was an 84' with high miles and the only thing that happened was somebody in front of my dad threw something out of their truck and it put a hole in the radiator. Now he has a 96' and nothing wrong with it.

Consumer Reports gave negative points to a ferrari once because they couldn't fit a wheel chair in the trunk. What a lame magazine.

i think MT has a section where they use a car for about a year and list updates on its reliability. i'll try to dig it up but don't hold your breath.

i can't recall if it was a Z28 or C5 they tested though.

Here's a suggestion:
Why don't find a C5 board and ask the people who actually owns the car.
