C32 AMG v Audi S4 - llop!

How has the maintenance been? I know it's a benz, so I don't expect it to last 200K miles with just few oil changes and new tires, but I hope it wouldn't be too bad?

Depends on the car itself. Ive owned 16 cars since 87 most used, some new. I like new cars, but I like working on used ones. This one is used and did need some work. I couldve bought new, but Im not paying $500 a month for a car that has to be driven under 10k miles a year and given back after 4 years. My last three were new, so I switched back to used because I felt like working on cars again.

This car is very expensive to break things on. The heated autodiming sideview mirror assemblies with housings are $1100. I accidently broke an interior door handle cover to change the $172 powerseat switch...replacement cost? $195!

This is what I've heard, the little sh!t starts to add up. My buddy had an A4 and it was always in the shop for mechanical problems though. I can deal with expensive replacement parts, but I would get erked if it's in the shop all the time.

Believe me, I look everywhere I can for aftermarket or used parts for certain items. So far Ive put about $4000 in repairs and upgrades in this car since June 2005. It doesnt need anything, because I pamper the sh|t out of it.

$4k is quite a bit in just a year. Especially if you're doing a lot of the labor?

$4k is quite a bit in just a year. Especially if you're doing a lot of the labor?

$1000 was for the chrome oem CLK rims
$900 was to repair the bumper damage from bad parallel parkers in NYC
$400 tires

Oh and dont forget that $450 wheel alingment . The front control arm was fuxored.

Drive / kompressor belts, +4 plugs, $75 oil changes, oem radiator flush / refill, plug wire replacement, fuel / air filter, new mercedes floormats, burlwood shift knob (gotta have that) 😉 and other odds n ends...$$$$.

I did only some of the work. The other things you have to have tools for. I just bought an oem filter wrench with the mercedes logo for $10 off ebay (dealer wanted $25) so at least I can do my own oil changes, which I just did with Mobil1 15k mile forumula.

i'm not sure about the newer M3's but one of my friends had a 1998 model and his was at the dealer all the time getting things fixed on it. i heard it was electrical-related problems. he did say that mechanically it was really nice though.

as for the Mercedes... i've only driven one. i don't remember the model but it was a new one that i test drove at the Lexus Performance event. that one was a little sluggish in the handling department if you ask me. and the interior electronic controls weren't as intuitive as i would have liked.

overall i like the lexus GS400, IS models, and BMW 3 series. oh, during test driving the new 3 series, i did _not_ encounter any electrical problems or any other kind of problems whatsoever.

sorry i kinda went off topic there... p.s. i've never driven an audi before.

The New IS looks to be a beautiful machine, but I am not a fan of a ~$40k Lexus when equally priced luxury cars offer more.

You'd have to pay me to buy a bangled 3 series. Also, if you're at a lexus performance event, do you really think they're going to give you something that outperforms the lexus?

That is what I probably will get if I go with a benz, just b/c by the time I can afford my next car, a resonably priced C55 will be a better option than a high milage C32.

EDIT: I must say, Car & Driver puts the C55 third behind the Caddy and new Audi RS4. The RS4 is also $40k more...so that doesn't surprise me. They put it behind the caddy as well. I think the drivers over @ C&D are hung up on the fact that the Benz is an auto. ...meh.

I'd take the M3 😛

But in your choices I'd take the S4. Not a fan of Merc's.

Oh yeah also our UK M3 has 343BHP, not that 10BHP makes that much difference 😛

I turn my head on the streets or when I'm driving for a S4. AMGs are a dime a dozen around here and only old farts drive 'em. Never seen a RS4 on the streets, that car's pimp.
