I suppose intel has the resources to really hurt AMD without going bankrupt themselfs. But I bet the second AMD can't hack it anymore, some big company will pop up and buy AMD and then lay the smackdown on Intel. Or maybe that's wishfull thinking, but we do need this kind of competition, it's doing awesome things for cpu prices.

Certainly is doing wonderful things for CPU prices...

I'm more interested in innovation though myself. It took AMD handing Intel its butt for a couple of years for Intel to snap to it and really innovate... Of course when they put their massive resources to the metal you wind up with the Core 2. However, when you really get into it, its not like Core 2 really is anything new...just a smarter revision on an old platform idea

AMD's Barcelona looks to be the same....just revisions....

I'm pretty interested in the Fusion idea though...having top tier components operating sans system bus has the potential for some serious power

but fusion is only ment for laptops and that kind of stuff ? It's innovation for sure but I doubt it will translate into raw processing power that can be utilized for desktop pc's.

In its first stages, fusion will integrate a gpu chip onto the processor die (or alternatively put a gpu coprocessor in a second socket? I'm not sure). Those chips will be similar to today's integrated graphics, so more high-end people will still want discrete graphics. In the long run, however, the idea is to eliminate graphics cards.

@ rmed64, a qaudcore has basicaly the same infrastructure and architecture as any dual core processor, it's just 2 dual core processors stamped together, which all go by the name core 2 duo. Even the single core celeron I believe it is called, makes use of the core 2 duo architecture, and thus is a core 2 duo cpu.

It is the same architecture, but the quad cores are not core 2 duo. That is why they have Q in front of the Q6600.

The Q6600 is dropping 50% july 22nd

@rmed, it's the same difference as with the single core celeron that use the core 2 duo architecture. And like I said, it's 2 dual cores using core 2 duo architecture stamped together, if those become cheaper, then 2 stamped together become cheaper too. All makes sense to me.

@bridge, these price cuts are talking about 2nd of september, but july 22nd will be the first price cuts of Intel, which translates into 266$ q6600. Take 30% or so of of that, and you end up with, 200$ or less.

The article clearly distinguishes both Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad. I will eat my own poo if Intel drops the Quad core 6600 AGAIN not even 2 months after this upcoming one.

They have no reason to, with AMD not having any Quad cores out, and if they go any lower, it will cut into Core 2 Duo territory pricing, which they don't want.....at least not so soon.

I'm not fighting with you, but I'm pretty sure the september price cuts will only be dual core chips.

Oh you might be right, the comment was mainly aimed at bridge, I simply explained the reasoning of swtethan to him :p

And the reasons Intel is doing this, is to lay the smackdown on AMD, since the should be coming out with the desktop version of the barclone soon after september 2nd. If every who thinks about upgrading by then buys intel cpu's instead of waiting for AMD, it will really hurt AMD once they do release their first qaudcore.

"The company will cut prices of its Core 2 Quad processor by 50 percent on July 22, according to an Intel document given to clients. The chips, introduced in November to run servers and the most expensive personal computers, sell for $530 each, according to Santa Clara, California-based Intel's Web site."

sounds like the quad is dropping in price...

Actually, rereading that it only actually says that the core 2 duo line will be cut on september 2nd, not the core 2 quads. I'd bet my money on that the quad prices will stay the same for the foreseeable future after July 22nd.

it really doesnt matter anyway, i dont mind paying $266 for quad core :D

Word is Agena probably won't even be out at Christmas.

I'm also looking at the Q6600 on july 22 (or maybe sept 2 now?). what mobo/ram did you pick out?

the intel price cuts are old news. I hadn't heard of extra cuts on sept 2, but that is probably a strong hint as to the date of barcelona's release. It makes sense that they would have further cuts on dual core processors as quad cores become more mid-high end instead of "insanely more horsepower than most mortals will ever need".

22nd July will see some C2D price cuts too. The cheapest 1333MHz C2D will be $163 and the costliest 800MHz C2D will be $133. That means the e63x0 & e64x0 will have to be priced between $163 & $133, and the e4300 will be less than $113. While stocks last, that is.
