C2 566 @ 850

Looks good to me (site is not English but the picture tells 1000 words). I haven't gotten my hands on an Alpha but a lot of people have gotten 850 with a C2-566 with a standard heatsink/fan, so I would think slapping an Alpha on there would better your chances. Just be sure to use heatsink grease 🙂
 
That one sits sideways if you use a slotket. The Alpha PEP66 has the fan pointing up from the motherboard if you're using a slotket setup.

If you're gonna be happy with 850, a Golden Orb is OK judging by the reviews, and that way you're sure not to block a DIMM slot.

I can get 920 stably out of my 533 by the way with an Alpha PEP66.

Whatever you do, make sure you get an FC-PGA specific setup.

Depending on what motherboard you have, the Alpha may give you a shot at speeds higher than 850. The GO is good, but not great. Also check out GlobalWin's, which are pretty good for the price.

yes i am gonna use a slotKet, it is from ABIT. i suppose i will only be able to use 100 MHz FSB, because the slotket only supports 66/100/133, and so i only intend to use 850 and not more.

do think that in that case i should ALWAYS use the PEP66 because of the special fan direction or is a globalwin VFP32 or FKP32 also okay? it is true they are much cheaper...

BTW: how big is the risk that the C2 will not properly work at 850 Mhz? how about overclocking a C2-600 to 900 MHz? is that stable? if yes, using which cooler?

533A@800 = very good chance. 600@900= not a good chance.

Personally, I'd just get a guaranteed 566. For the fan, make sure it's a FC-PGA specific one.
 
what exactly do you mean by "guaranteed"? do mean buying one from somebody who has already tested it, like you mentioned in the other thread under "overclokcing" ? if yes, the problem would be how to get it to germany, where i live - i would suppose the shipping would cost half of the CPU...

Hmmm... didn't know you were in Germany. You could probably get a guaranteed chip alone shipped to you for about US $10-15. There are many places (but I recommend CompuWiz1) that heavily test the chip and pick out the ones that do 100 FSB. You'd probably be best to get the cooling locally, since that's heavy. But also you'll have to factor in duty and taxes.

If you could buy everything locally and went non-guaranteed Celeron, I'd go for a 533A then. Better chance for overclock.

Or just pay the extra money for a PIII.

i found a german company who sells guaranteed celerons, but they are quite expensive: about 130 DM more (about 65 US$)...
i don't know if that's worrth it...

If your not buying a gaurateed 566 I would also recomend the 533.
I bought one of each.The 566 does 892@1.70V while the 533 does 936@1.79Volts. The higher multiplier on the 566 can make it harder to work with. Alot of boards go from 105 to 110

The 566 was much trickier because of the jump from 105fsb to 110fsb. Where as the 533 I can run from 110,112,113,115,117,118,120fsb.The smaller fsb increaments help you to squeeze every bit of OC out of that chip.

If your using a board that supports fsb adjustments in 1mhz. increaments then either chip would probably work fine.

I have built 11 OEM CII 566 @ 850 computers all using the Golden Orb and Radio Shack heatsink. Idle temp 32 C, Game use 41 C. The Golden Orb works well.
 
i think it the fact that the cpu doesnt generate that much heat
compared to k6-2
I can't do any more then 20-30mhz without
having more then 55C
it lock up in the long run thought after a few hour
definitely go Celeron myself
waiting for the prices to settle down a little more.

 
I've got a Golden orb that works well on my c566@850(had an Alpha when I wasn't running an FC-PGA chip and that worked great too), but the Agilent Arcticooler looks like it could be your best bet. Don't know when they'll be available though.
