I have the Sony C1VPK Vaio Picturebook.. just recently reformatted it and clean installed WinXP Corporate.

I followed all of the instructions on how to upgrade to WinXP at ita.sel.sony.com, except for the one about upgrading the BIOS (since I dont have a USB floppy drive - and the Picturebook doesnt have one built in).

But, depressing the Capture button (it's next to the power button) doesn't start up the Smart Capture program like it used to.. what do I need to do?? I notice in the task manager that the sscrdy.exe program is running in the background - on other Picturebooks, that seems to be the program that responds to the Capture button.

In general, I need to map a weird key/button on the laptop to the execution of some program, or for the program to recognize the pressing of the button. Perhaps there's some third party software that will recognize and program weird devices?

So.. I figured it out.

After installing XP and installing all of the programs that the Sony site (ita.sel.sony) wanted me to install, I first uninstalled the Smart Capture Application and Smart Capture Ready (that I had just installed not many moments ago), then had to go back and reinstall an old version of those apps.

I had to download a program that would unpack the data from the Application Recovery CD (I happen to have both the C1VP and C1VPK, and I could only find the CDs for the C1VP - the C1VP comes with WinME, so all of its applications were written for ME. But they still work okay for XP.). The unpacking program is called KCAP.exe and can be found at the C1MV Lies site.

Following the instructions there - it unpacked a whole bunch of applications onto my HD, then I proceeded to look through all of the folders that it unpacked and I went in and ran the setup programs for the ones that seemed useful (like PowerPanel, and Smart Capture and Smart Capture Ready).

For the C1VP Application Restore CD, the Smart Capture Ready program is stored under 0107111.SNC, and the Smart Capture Application is in 0104601.SNC.

And now, I can take pictures again with that Capture button.. yay... :D

BTW, there is a buttload of useful troubleshooting information regarding VAIO picturebooks in the forum at this site.

IF this is confusing.. msg me and I will try to clarify.

Edit: In addition to the Smart Capture Application and Smart Capture Ready programs, I also installed the Camera Control Utility.

I was JUST about to post here and say that I just found some info on Sony's website that might solve your problem... :) I'm glad to hear that you got the issue resolved.

THANKS for taking the time to share the details of your work. I've been searching for a way to unpack those apps on the installations CDs as well... welcome to Anandtech!! :)
