computer stalled and it corrupted!!!! i tried the fixboot, fixmbr, chkdsk /p and /r but it doesn't work... i have heard that there is a program or something to fix system files in the win xp cd... but where do i find it and/or what to do to go to that program... i really dont want to reinstall windows (my avg lifetime for windows is only about 5-6 months!!!) so please help if you can!!!

you might be out of luck... my friend had that problem so we replaced his old system file with mine which was identical in size, it didnt help at all.... we ended up reinstalling windows w/o format

mee is right. Once you get that error you have to reinstall WinXP. Your lifetime is good. Mine is about 3 months. But I like to screw with mine alot.

Just boot off the cd choose to install WinXP.. it will detect a currently installed XP and give you the option of reparing it.. choose this.
It will basically then just over install it.

unfortunately booting of the CD and choosing repair just takes to the recovery console.
I had the same problem and tried a fix from MS which didn't work so I had to reinstall.
Check out
MS reg startup fix

There are two ways to repair XP. Using the recovery console which is the first thing to try. And doing what already posted, boot off cd.. choose new install.. it will detect existing XP and ask you if you want to repair it... do that.
