c-media 8738 sound card having issues streaming video online

just bought a new Mad Dog sound card (CMedia 8738 chipset) for my dad's old HP (P3 600mhz, 192mb ram, 10gb seagate HD, TNT video card with Windows 2000, w/ all sp's and updates).

his old connexant pos modem/sound combo-card was pretty flaky, sometimes it worked, othertimes it wouldn't so i thought this relatively simple and cheap ($8 at microcenter) sound card would work. However, though his old sound card had no problems with streaming video online with Win. Media Player, this new one is horrible!

The sound is extremely choppy and sounds like a broken record record player. I've gotten the newest drivers for it, which were on the MS update site but they were released in 2002! I've also tried the upgraded to DX8.1 and Media Player 9 but that didn't work either.

Please lend some advice if you can. I have the same chipset sound card on my computer (diff. manufacturer) and it works fine for all uses, mp3s, dvds, online-steaming. Thanks!

There are newer drivers - you need to try both Cmedia selections at the Windowsupdate catalog. They've got both of these listed there:
C Media Electronics Incorporation
C-Media Electronics Incorporation

The latter has more drivers available to it.
Click "Find Driver updates", then "sound."
Select the C-Media line, and your OS, and look for the most recent driver among the listings. Give that a shot.
I'd normally suggest that you check the manufacturer's site, but C-media's own website still lists drivers from 2002. I've no idea why they don't update their own site.

Note: that link only works with IE. Other browsers will just report "page not found".

Umm.....hmm, don't know. Spyware maybe? Spybot, Adaware, and CWShredder should be all you need to clean the system out..

I had that problem with a cheap soundcard containing the same c-media 8738 chipset. The solution was to put it in PCI slot 2. Don't know why that worked, but it did.
