C+D 2015 lightning lap: Z06 kills, caddy's fly...

Fabulous for the z06. I noticed something very odd. There is no way a shelby gt 500 should beat a ford gt. I wonder if the gt owner told them to take it easy.

the ford GT is pretty old at this point. wouldn't surprise me, to be honest.

there is no doubt the c7 is a serious piece of machinery, that said I don't think I would ever buy one

Amazing how well GM's cars compete in their classes. Next up is the '16 Camaro which will probably best the Mustangs. Shame that they always screw something up like CUE or visibility.

The 2013 1LE Camaro is already almost 4 seconds faster (when tested in 2013) than the 2015 mustang (which also had the mustang equivalent track pack). GM has already said that the new (non track pack 1LE) Camaro will be faster than the old 1LE. That being said, the new mustang IMHO is far from a disappointment. I really do like them (really all of them after they added the coyote). It's a pretty good time to be a car guy.

There was a recent article where the 2016 Camaro team talked about visibility how the buyers (who were polled) were not willing to sacrifice looks for better visibility (so they won't be improving it all that much with the new one).

Never had any experiences with CUE - but you aren't the only one that I've heard complain!

The z06 is impressive. I can't wait to see what they do with this generation ZR1. Would love to see how the Mclaren P1, 675 and Ferrari theFerrari would stack up.

How do they do the testing on these? Curious since isn't the Z06 supposed to have pretty severe performance dropoff after a pretty limited time on track? If they do practice throughout and then do a single hot lap then it could make the Z06 look great but it could be terrible for racing other than hot lap qualifying. Or has GM addressed this issue?

Shame they didn't have a new Viper ACR. Now that would have been a helluva competition.

Also, yeah I know things have changed, but the Mustang beating a Ford GT, but getting curbstomped by Cadillac Sedans is just...weird.

The biggest (and saddest) takeaway from this for me is that a new CTS-V is quicker around VIR than an 06 Viper. Granted 2006 was not the greatest year for Viper performance but still. That is just absurd levels of performance for a 4200 lb sedan.

Welcome to 2015. The 2012 Mustang Shelby was faster than the 2005 Ford GT. And the GT was competent for it's class.

Wow the Mustang GT is fast. My friend has an Evora S and it's no joke. Especially as a track car. Crazy the GT is as fast as that. A tighter track would favor the Evora and it's probably a lot easier to drive fast. Of course the big GM V8s are ridiculous fast though.

Glad to see my Fiesta St even in stock form does pretty well for what it is 🙂

I used to love articles like this just because I enjoy the data charts

Very surprised by the Mustang.

I do wonder whether times should be compared between years given potential differences in track conditions.

I was more curious how the GT350 will do against the more track focused Camaro when/if it comes out. Will it be able to shave 14 seconds of the GT times to match the outgoing Z/28? Also wish they had a Hellcat in the mix to see how it stacks up to the other muscle cars.

I also remember reading that article, but can't remember if those were current owners or not. Having driven one as a loaner, that was by far one of the worst design features.

Actually looking back through it, I'm a little surprised at the Lexus, seems like all the articles talked like it was a bit of a dog, and I guess compared to the Cadillac's it is. But really, considering the prices for it and the Caddies, maybe I shouldn't be that wowed how they compared to the Mustange, they're twice the price.

And also back to the GT versus Mustang GT, I'd guess tire compound alone makes probably half the difference there. Couple that with all the new work on design and setup of suspension and handling would be the other major boost. The GT was a pretty simple machine when it comes down to it, just good old fashioned mix of power, weight, and layout (mid-engine with big meaty rear tires). It was more in line with the Vipers. And for the person lamenting how a Cadillac sedan can best 10 year old Viper, well its the same thing, and its why the new Viper has been such a relative disappointment, as just to compete you basically have to properly setup electronic aides and the tuning of the car. The Viper basically needs to go ludicrous, which is why the SRT version I think could very likely really wow people and in real racing would handle the Z06 Vette, as it has a lot of features that make it ludicrous for a street car, but great for a track car. But they either need to work on finessing the Viper into a modern dignified brute, or they need to go supercharged and get 800hp so that it becomes scary again.
