LINK

I hope they leave the download up for a few days at least.

I never played the game, so I am going to grab it and try it out.

Awesome deal for the Free Stuff subforum.

I fixed the 1st link. I hit the https button instead of the http.

Thanks Keith for the quick fix.

Fun game, not as polished as RA2 but still lots of fun! I have the massive C&C pack so this is irrelevant for me :p

I still play this game occasionally with my old Future Wars mod. It's hilarious in skirmish or multiplayer.

It doesn't seem to be completely stable on recent computers (might be related to the processor speed), but I play it every now and then with my brother over null modem on some old machines.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert cannot be directly installed on either Windows XP or Windows Vista, with the notice "Red Alert can only be installed on Windows 95" appearing if an installation is attempted on either of the two operating systems. It however remains possible to manually install the game and its expansion packs, by running Red Alert's executables in Windows 95 compatibility mode, and by replacing the "Thipx32.dll" file which the game installs within its main directory with an updated version...

The entire game is really small compared to the download.
Most of it is video files .
Compression then wasn't anywhere close to what it is now.
Wish they had gone through and done a quick re-compress with mpeg4.
Sadly the original source files were lost during the WW transition.
I still wonder if some of the WW employees made that happen :)

I posted this on another forum, but I'll share it with you as well...

This is the method I used to get the game to work on Vista:

1. Extract the downloaded .rar to a folder and mount the ISO image in Alcohol 52%.
2. Open the disk on the mounted drive and find SETUP.EXE and apply Windows95 compatibility
to that file.
3. Click and run SETUP.EXE - install the game to the default directory - skip
the directx install and the westwood program - and allow the install to finish.
4. Reopen the folder you extracted the .rar to and find the XP_Patch folder - open
it and double-click on the RA108USP.EXE to extract three files named PATCH.
5. Copy the three files to WESTWOOD\REDALERT folder and then click on
PATCH.EXE..
6. Last - apply Win95 compatibility to the RA95.EXE in this folder...
7. Play the Game.

Do I need to download both the Soviet and Allied disc or just one of them?

Thanks in advance.

Now its time to mod the Mammoth to 125% faster lol :)

I've only been playing the Allied side - disc one. When you first start a new game - you've have a choice of which side to play - I'm sure you'll need disc two to play as the Soviets....

Good thing, the original Red Alert was very good. It'll be interesting to see if such an old game will be compatible right away in XP/Vista. I know at least that I had to run the original C&C on Windows 95 compatibility mode in XP for it to launch and run properly.
