QueBert, I would be the happiest person when the above comes true. I dislike Facebook with a passion. I cannot believe thinking people can be addicted to an online "social networking" site. Dont people have friends in real life that they have to sit in front of a computer and interact?

Uh, I use Facebook to help me interact with people in real life. I can post my soccer team's schedules on there, let people know if I'm throwing a party, organize nights out, etc etc. The internet can turn people into anti-social losers, but it can also make it easier to get together with people in the real world.

Time defeats all stupid social networking sites. Which is every one of them. Each one was more popular than the one it took down, but they all fell at one point. I don't care how big Facebook is, it will die. Maybe not tomorrow, or even next year. But it will die. People will start to see how stupid it is and actually begin to care about their privacy. I remember when Myspace ruled the internet, I remember when Yahoo ruled the internet. 10 years ago nobody was fucking with Yahoo. FB's time is coming, just a matter of being patient until something people perceive as better comes along. And then that will too die when the next big thing comes along. It's a never ending cycle. Twitter will be around longer than Facebook, mark my words.

match.com is still around, it's social networking at it's most minialistic.

Give one single logical reasonable explanation why networking sites are stupid and should go down? Your hatred is completely ridiculous. You are a bandwagon hater. Think for yourself for once.

Wait, so people have to have reasons for their preferences? I don't like fish, do I need to produce a logical explanation of why?

I'm actually do have a facebook account, and I could think of several reason not to get one.
  • It is a waste of time. Yes, I get that it doesn't have to be, but seriously, "staying connected" more often then not degrades into taking stupid quizes about random movie quotes, or playing farmville.
  • You like your privacy. People that like facebook the most are the ones that don't mind sharing random pointless information with other. But some people really do value their privacy, even from friends.
  • The sites can be very annoying. Who hasn't seen 100 random application requests? Yes, they have fixed the issue, but that doesn't make it any less annoying with your uncle bob updates his status to let you know how his foot fungus is doing.
  • It really doesn't help connectivity. Seriously, so many people treat social networking sites as a "Whoever gets the most friends, wins." It is like saying "If you are lonely go to time square." Being a face in the crowd can be just as disconnected as being totally alone.
  • People act differently online then they do in person.. Seriously, do I need examples of this? People that you normally get along with can be assholes online. You are friends with the person, not their bipolar online persona.
And the list goes on.

Just because YOU can't think of a reason not to like something, doesn't mean that those reasons don't exist.

I agree with all of this except the last sentence. Twitter is already dieing since facebook pretty much does the same thing plus more.

Most of your complaints are with how people use it, not the service. You can easily block all application requests, you can block annoying people from showing up on your feed, you can not play stupid games, and you can not waste your entire life on the website if you so choose.

Facebook is popular because it's an awesome way to share photos, plan events, and stay in touch. People use it for more than that, but you don't have to. And yes, it is kinda creepy.

:) Like I said, I do actually have a facebook page. Those are just some spit-firing reasons for why not to use it. While many of those things can be tweaked/eliminated through a change in settings, most people get intimidated when the proposition of changing settings for anything comes up.

There still were a few points that can't be totally avoided by tweaking settings.

So wait, let me get this straight.

You are against FB because it's so useful that everyone thinks you should have it, but you'd rather have the awkward response of not having one because...?

Nope you didn't give any real reason. I'm just going to assume you prefer to stay anonymous because you are actually anti-social in normal life.

It's not useful, it's killing peoples ability to have face to face social interaction.
Not to mention how many people spend how much time a day there playing stupid games, or messaging people they don't really know.

Though to users of sites like that, they think that people they meet online are their friends. People you have never met in real life aren't friends. They're electronic text.
I know to many people that would rather hangout on Facebook doing God knows what, instead of going out and hanging out with human beings.
Samething goes for WoW players.

Wait, people still use MySpace? I thought it was only used to host the pages for shitty teenage bands?

I used to keep a website up just so I could post new pictures of my kids for grandma. Then came facebook. Much easier to post on and it notified her of what was going on.... as she likes that kind of stuff.

But really who gives a shit about one of your friends from high school having a shit this morning. I agree with you and eventually people will start to see what a waste of time it is. Granted at 500,000,000 people it will take a while.. maybe never... but I see traffic dropping off signficantly in the future.

Pretty much everything will die, at least in it's current form. My point was that FB is what lead to MySpace's demise, which many saw coming from a distance. Right now there isn't a clear line of sight in to what would take down FB.

Most ppl that talk about all these pointless invites are simply friends with ppl with no lives or really aren't on facebook.

For me it makes it easy to hit up 5-6 people and have them all be part of the conservation more or less real time.

It's how we have gotten together the past two weeks exclusively.

Only phone call was at the venue to meet up.

I still have to laugh at people ripping on people for liking FB.
Its objective. newsflash: different people like different things.
What are you posing on right now? ATOT is listed under "Social" for the AT Forums. So this is, in its simplest form, a social networking (section of a) forum. Many of the anti-FB posters have 10s of thousands of posts in. But yeah... FB is a waste of time. Arguing about FB on a different social forum is WAY more productive.

this is the biggest lulz of all, especially when lifers rip on FB.

I think the people who hate Facebook just aren't using it correctly or they're judging the entire site on how other people use it. Or they're just the type that hate everything that's mainstream (Walmart, McDonalds, Starbucks, etc.).

- Only add friends who are actually your friends
- Change your privacy settings to only allow your friends to see anything about you
- Don't post dumb crap
- Don't use apps

If you adhere to those 4 things, it's a great tool for keeping in touch with people that you probably would only speak to once or twice a year. Instead of having to wait until a holiday or vacation to visit your friends and see what they've been up to and look at their photo albums, you can get updates easily and on your own time. Somebody posting dumb crap all the time? Unfriend them or block their updates.

Try almost all bands still use myspace. Pretty much the only reason I go there now.

To those who think facebook is going away, you're crazy.
