Selected soundbites from the article...

The announcement comes almost seven months after Rubin announced that carriers were activating 300,000 Android phones per day. Two months before that, Eric Schmidt said that number was at 200,000 activations per day.

A recent report from IDC said that Android will capture about 40 percent of the market in the second half of 2011. IDC pointed to the "significant and growing list of vendors who have made Android the cornerstone of their respective smartphones strategies," as the key to its success. Android will likely have 38.9 percent market share in 2011, growing to 43.8 percent by 2015

Raising some eyebrows, IDC also predicted that Windows Phone—not iOS—will be the second-most popular mobile platform in 2015.

Google's Rubin: 500,000 Android Activations Each Day
Wireless providers are now activating more than half a million Android devices every day, according to a tweet from Google's Andy Rubin.

"There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day," wrote Rubin, vice president of engineering at Google.

That number is increasing every day, he said, growing 4.4 percent week over week.

The announcement comes almost seven months after Rubin announced that carriers were activating 300,000 Android phones per day. Two months before that, Eric Schmidt said that number was at 200,000 activations per day.

Since December, Google has formally unveiled Android Honeycomb, a version of the mobile OS built for tablets, first unveiled via the Motorola Xoom. In late April, Google announced an Android OS update to version 2.3.4, which mostly contained a number of bug fixes, but also included support for video and voice chat with Google Talk. Several weeks later, it opened its Google I/O conference by announcing a new version of Honeycomb, its next-generation "Ice Cream Sandwich" release, as well as movies, music, and Android accessories.

Google is also not facing any major competition from Apple this summer. Cupertino, which normally unveils a new iPhone in June, has kept users waiting for its next-generation smartphone. Apple's latest press event focused on Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5, which will debut in the fall—most likely with the iPhone 5.

Good. I know quite a few people that bought into the bullshit iPhone hype, and literally every single one of their phones are broken in some way. It's a piece of shit, unlike my ~two year old Droid.

The ratio is changing as the android OS gains popularity, but I highly doubt people will abandon iPhone entirely, hell I'm still using my motorola razr.

iPhone won't go away, just as Macs won't go away. Not as many people will use the iPhone in the future.

"What is best for the customer—integrated versus fragmented? We think this is a huge strength of our system versus Google’s. When selling to people who want their devices to just work, we think integrated wins every time. We are committed to the integrated approach. We are confident it will triumph over Google’s fragmented approach."

"Folks who want porn can buy and [sic] Android phone."

What's responsible for this? Are android phones cheaper? I know some of them have better hardware in them than the latest iPhone now, but it seems from the reviews that I've read that the user experience is still lacking by comparison.

I haven't used an Android device I like (and I do like Google). Right now, Apple's mobile devices just work smoother and that is what appeals to me. Hence, if I ever go that route with my phone, it will definitely be an iPhone for now. And I've already purchased an iPad.

Apple isn't going anywhere, it just does some things better.

If they would open up the iPhone even just a little, it could start gaining market share back. I don't know about "500,000 Activations per day" That seems ridiculously high.

The Apple crowd will continue to buy Apple products, regardless. Apple has enough customers to keep them going.

There are many Android phones that are free/cheap with contract, so that really inflates the numbers. I know quite a few Android users that use them just because thye were free and the people are cheap asses. On my carrier (Rogers) there are 6 Android phones you can choose from for under $20 on a contract, cheapest IPhone option is $99.

Don't get me wrong, I like Android more than IPhone too (I had a IPhone 3G, now use a Nexus S and enjoy it much more), but I'm smart enough to know that when you offer many more choices, and some higher end options, you will get more users than the company with just one option.

Unfortunately not many people are that smart.

android phones are much cheaper and can be had on the pay as you go plans for dirt cheap as well. they give away a lot of android phones w/new contracts too. there are so many diffeernt things at play here. it means absolutely nothing as to which phone is "better". they are both better than the other phones, it just 100% depends what the user wants.

I heard that the iPhone will be outlawed; with all Apple products as well.

Turns out, Steve Jobs has been using unbaptisted children (stolen from good old Christian Southerners) to make his devil of a device. Poor children. Never experienced the glory of Gawd!!!

Honestly guys. We get it. You don't like Apple products. I am not sure where and how people wave their Mac cock in your face in real life, but, how about you take it up with them? That is, if they truely exist,....

Isn't the iPhone's market share still growing? So basically, more people are transitioning to smartphones.
