I thought it would appropriate for today. Sure feels like it sometimes, doesn't it?

A long, long time ago,
I can still remember how
that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
that I could make those people dance,
and maybe they'd be happy for a
while.

But February made me shiver
with every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
when I read about his widowed bride,
but something touched me deep inside
the day the music died.

So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
and them good old boys were
drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die,
this'll be the day that I die.

Did you write the Book of Love,
and do you have faith in God above
if the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock 'n roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?

And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with him
'cause I saw you dancin' in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes,
man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
with a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
but I knew I was out of luck
the day the music died.

I started singin'
bye-bye, Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
and them good old boys were
drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die,
this'll be the day that I die.

Now for ten years we've been on our own
and moss grows fat on a rollin' stone.
But that's not how it used to be
when the jester sang for the King and Queen
in a coat he borrowed from James Dean.
And a voice that came from you and me.
Oh, and while the King was looking down
the jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned,
no verdict was returned.
And while Lennon read a book of Marx,
the quartet practiced in the park.
And we sang dirges in the dark
the day the music died.

We were singing
bye-bye, Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
and them good old boys were
drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die,
this'll be the day that I die.

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
the Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter,
eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul out on the grass
the players tried for a forward pass
with the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume,
while the Sergeants played a marching tune
we all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance,
'cause the players tried to take the field
But the marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
the day the music died?

We started singing
bye-bye, Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
and them good old boys were
drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die,
this'll be the day that I die.

Oh, and there we were all in one place
a generation lost in space,
with no time left to start again.
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'cause fire is the Devil's only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
my hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
could break that Satan's spell,
and as the flames climbed high into the night
to light the sacrifical rite,
I saw Satan laughing with delight
the day the music died.

He was singing
bye-bye, Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
and them good old boys were
drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die,
this'll be the day that I die.

I met a girl who sang the blues
and I asked her for some happy news,
but she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
where I'd heard the music years before,
but the man there said the music woudn't play.
And in the streets the children screamed,
the lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.

But not a word was spoken,
the church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most,
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost,
they caught the last train for the coast
the day the music died.

And they were singing
bye-bye, Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
and them good old boys were
drinkin' whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die,
this'll be the day that I die.

They were singing bye-bye,
Miss American Pie
drove my chevy to the levee
but the levee was dry,
them good old boys were
drinking whiskey and rye
singin' this'll be the day that I die.

Watch the news tonight and you will see the relavence. If not...relisten to the song. Don't take the song litteraly, just just meaning and the points that are being pushed. I bet there won't be much "happy news" for awhile (for example).

What about this one?

Jack Johnson - The News

A billion people died on the news tonight
But not so many cried at the terrible sight
Well mama said
It's just make believe
You can't believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight

Who's the one to decide that it would be alright
To put the music behind the news tonight
Well mama said
You can't believe everything you hear
The diagetic world is so unclear
So baby close your ears
On the news tonight
On the news tonight

The unobtrusive tones on the news tonight
And mama said

Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die?
At least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eyes
Mama said
It's just make believe
You cant believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight

Oh. Well in that case, we should but away Don McLean and bust out some BARRY MCGUIRE, baby!

The Eve Of Destruction

The Eastern world, it is explodin',
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'.
You're old enough to kill, but not for votin',
You don't believe in war -- but what's that gun you're totin'?
An' even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'.
But you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.
Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say,
An' can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away,
There'll be no one to save, will the world in a grave.
Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy.
An' you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeak, my blood's so mad feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'.
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
Handful of senators don't pass legislation,
An' marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin',
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'.
An' you tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China,
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama.
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space,
But when you return it's the same ol' place,
The poundin' of the drums, the pride an' disgrace.
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace.
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace,
An' tell me, over and over and over again, my friend,
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction,
No, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

I think he was only quoting one line from the song. "bye, bye mis American pie". He feels that Miss American Pie is gone. Quoting the entire song is not ok. It does not relate. On that note....

Here are the lyrics of another song that doesnt relate but might if you squint and look at it upsidedown while intoxicated and high on acid....

REM - Its the End of the World as we know it

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site. Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped. Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down. Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine...

(It's time I had some time alone)

Since the song was about the airplane crash that killed 3 pop stars I fail to see how relevant it is to today...

I didn't realize that...I don't like reading about what a song is supposed to be about because it ruins the song. I like songs that can be interpreted for each individual.
