Assembling the Avengers

Marvel Studios announced that it has moved up the North American release date of the highly anticipated feature film "Thor" from May 20, 2011 to May 6, 2011, a coveted date that kicks off the summer. "Thor" will be released in theatres worldwide via Paramount Pictures.

The new May 6, 2011 release date for "Thor" follows "Iron Man 2" kicking off this summer on May 7, 2010. After "Thor," "The First Avenger: Captain America" hits theaters on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" opens another summer on May 4, 2012.

In "Thor," Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane. Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Stuart Townsend as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgard.

The screenplay for THOR was penned by Mark Protosevich as well as Ashley Miller, Zak Stentz and Don Payne. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

The epic adventure THOR spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

lol @ another comic book movie. These are getting old...but I can't wait to see it.

They should make a Secret Wars movie with all the characters though.

So is this actually going to be about the Viking gods or is it some dumb comic book adaptation about a guy named Thor in Middle America who kills people with a hammer?

edit: read the description...sounds kind of cool.

Sounds like they wanted to release a film to compete with Clash of the Titans (2010).

That said, my biggies are:

Robin Hood (Ridley Scott is a hero of mine) Iron Man 2 (RDJ made me a believer).

Most dangerous villain obviously = Loki

When you're down to Thor and Submariner you know you're running out of comic book characters to do movies about.

Well, they haven't exactly been scraping Ant-Man off the bottom of the barrel. 😀

Oh, I know that it was thought of at one time since he is part of the Avengers but notice it hasn't got off the ground and, outside of the IMDB page, hasn't been mentioned by Marvel at all.

they're probably scuffling over how to market it--b/c you know some ad-wizards realize that some money can be made from this, if aimed properly.

Not that I know anything about ant-man, but I see it working as a pseudo-serious, but mostly satirical take on the current generation of successful comic-book flicks.

maybe somewhere between the Tick and Hancock...and it could be they're trying to convince someone like Kevin Smith to take over the director/screenwriter role, as he would be ideal for the type of flick that I described.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. When I first read about the proposed Ant-Man movie it was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek satirical film.

I can see why the scrapped it though because it wouldn't fit in with the other more serious Avenger character movies like Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America.
