By 2004 Wal-Mart plans to open a new store every buisness day

OMG WTF

Just saw that on a PBS show called "Store Wars" or something. It was about this town, Ashburn (Texas, I believe?) going up against Wal-Mart. Wally World wanted to open a store but many people in the town didn't want it.

Anyway, at the end of the show (****SPOILER**** Wal-Mart won and is building the new store 😉) the fact came up that Wal-Mart will be building a new store EVERY BUISNESS DAY by 2004.

How is that possible? Everyone upon everyone goes to a Wal-Mart already. Seems like they'll just be wasting their money opening new ones.

Unless, of course, they plan to go overseas?

Just found that interesting.

they are opening up a supercenter here in my small southern ohio town. Should destroy the kmart and force the closure of a crappy big bear grocery store.

<< how can that be possible?? r they planning to open a new store every buisness day in the us?? >>

Same thing I'm wondering....

Hopefully amdskip can enlighten us 🙂

WallMart = White Trash Heaven. Sort of like Fry's for us geeks..

(I don't shop at WallMart. The one time I went to the one near where I live, I was astounded by the sheer quantity of trashy people inside..)

At least you're not judgmental.

You think that's a lot? A new McDonalds opens up every 6 hours. Heard that on the radio yesterday. They're also the worlds 3rd largest toy distributor... that's a lot of happy meals. 😉

They are about to open one up here too, despite having two (that I can recall) within a 15-20 minute drive.

I'm currently reading a book entitle "slam-dunking wal mart"

It talks about their dirty business practices and how they destroy small towns and local businesses...and then move on when the money dries up (like locusts!)

It also talks about ways to rally your community against new walmarts.

Of course, i've got like 4 walmarts, 3 targets, and 6 best buys within about 1/2 an hour of me, so i think it's too late!

That has absolutely nothing to do with the WalMart. It has to do with where you live!!! LOL

Why ask amdskip when you can ask me? I know much more than he does. 😀 I shouldn't be saying this as it is corporate info, but let me just say ***Japan*** for now. 😉

Read Sam Walton's autobiography, "Made In America" sometime and you'll have a much fonder appreciation of the company. Wal-Mart is a not only a marvel in retail, but business itself. Did you know they're the world's largest company now, just inching out ExxonMobil last month?

Yes, that is all true...and WalMart stock was probably the best investment you could have made in the 80's...BUT, some of his business practices are quite ruthless.

I say whatever works, though 🙂

See, i don't think the are opening a walmart every day, they are building a walmart every day. Which could make sense. They could be remodling, building new stores, switching to Super Walmarts. That kinda stuff. Its not like they are building and completing it in one day. May take weeks and therefore is possible to have a store in production every day for a while. Also, i bet its not just walmarts they are taking in consideration by making this statement. They could also be talking about Lowes and Sam's Club stores that they also own.

Still, it does sound like alot of marketing fluff.

It has nothing to do with where you live. When they opened one up where I used to live, which was kind of ghetto, I could not figure out where all the white trash came from.

I saw that show on PBS. They can open a new one every day because like sohcrates said they will close a store when the money dries up. I despise Wal-Mart mainly because of the way they keep their store cleanliness wise and how there is always piles of stock all over the place making it hard to get around.

No, I think opening is probably closer. If they were just talking about stores in the process of being built it would only take three or four total to cover the entire year. Just about any business could make that claim. But to open 365 stores in 2004? That sounds like something Walmar would do.

<< holy crap, imagine a walmart on every corner, just like Mickey D's >>

Ever been to Hawaii? ABC Stores everywhere. You can stand on one corner and spot 3 of them at the same time.

Just to double-check I went out to their site. Here are store openings for this month. It wouldn't take much for them to make it one every day:

And, this is bad, why? It is the nature of life at all levels that the fit survive, and the weak perish. Why should it be any different in business?

I'm just hoping the dump of a KMart here is on the bankruptcy hit-list and Walmart takes the building.

What?! You're kidding me. They are NOT completely building the stores in 1 day?

Well, I'll be damned. There goes any respect I had for Wal-Mart.
