BX Master flash problem

Zab

Senior member
When I went to update my bios, it wouldn't work and gave me the error unknown flash type. I was updating to the 540 ver.

Aslo just before it goes into the win98 spash screen it says unknown flash type as well.
Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Thanks

Id say just reflash it. Be sure it is for the BX Master, not the 6163pro. Mistakes like that are usually fatal for the bios. If it still works, you are lucky.

That bin file should have been w6163imj.540
Personally, I reflash from the hard drive in Dos. Copy the flash program and the bin file to the root of C drive. Then boot to dos, at C:\ type the flash program .exe name, then when it asks for the file to program, enter the path, which would be C:\w6163imj.540
Once it is confirmed, then shut down, reboot to windows and delete those files off the root of the drive.

Thanks for the reply Steve.

I tried to re-flash it but it won't work and just gives the error unknown flash type. The bios is for the bx master and worked perfectly on my other bx master ( I have 2 )

Also that's the bin file I am using.

I flashed to that latest one with no problems..hope you can recover it Zab.. Ive done it Compuwiz way and with a floppy on this board...worked fine either way. Maybe you just need to redownload the flash file, sometimes they get corrupted during download. BTW your cable is enroute.. 🙂

Thanks for the input John.
Although I don't think its a problem with the bin file as I have used it to flash my other bx master without any problems.

I just flashed my MSI BX Master to the 5.4 bios tonight, on my Celeron 566@850 Mhz machine running Win ME, heres how I, I made a barebones boot disk,by taking a formatted floppy, went to C:/Windows/Command/EBD folder and copied Command.com and IO Sys files to the floppy. Downloaded the 5.4 bios file from MSI. Unzipped the file to the floppy. Left floppy in the machine and rebooted, it booted up to the flash utility, with the imj file already
entered, waited a couple seconds, and it automatically started and completed the bios flash. Removed floppy,
re-booted, went into bios and re-entered the overclock info as when it first booted up, it booted to default 566 mhz. After re-entering the bios info, it re-booted with new Bios indicated, and at 850 Mhz. This is the first time I have up dated a motherboard bios as I have been reluctant to try it, shoot no pain, easy as pie. Radarman

Well I switched my cpu and sloket from a msi 6905 Master ver 2.3 and a celeron 566/850 to an abit sloket and a celeron 300/450 and was able to flash then.

Whats up with that?

Anyone care to comment?

Maybe something with the 6905?

If that is the case, maybe the MSI 6905 is jumpered incorrectly. They generally work better than the Abit Slotket III. We'll, so it worked...good. 🙂

Maybe so, I dont have the box, but I can change the voltage or bus speeds in the bios
Yep I'm much happier now 🙂
