So while driving back home today, I get off the freeway and a WRX STI passes me right then. So we are both driving along. Now my house is about 5 miles away from the freeway, and there are a lot of traffic lights in the middle. Maybe about 20 or so.

Anyway, this guy swooshes pass me and I tell my dad who is sitting next to me - that is one fast car. So we catch up to him at the next light. And the guy stalls it when the light turns green. And he cant get it rolling again. So we go around him on our normal pace at the speed limit. And then a minute later he goes again... swoosh... and we catch him at the next light. And he stalls it again.

This probably happened like 10 times. The last light we found him at - he had his hazards on in the middle of the street cause he couldnt get the car going.

It was just truly hilarious for me and my dad. The guy bought a brand new STI, such a fast car, bought it with a MT just to 'show off' probably - because he truly did'nt know how to drive it. He just got owned by his 'l33t driving skillz'.

Just thought this was hilarious.

Stop being mean to people when they are trying to learn stick.

I bought a manual without knowing how to drive it because I wanted to learn. I was extremely embarrased every time I stalled. I still get pretty nervous when I'm on a hill and some jerk pulls up right behind me. Let the guy learn and stop being so jealous you don't have his car.

i'm not being mean to him at all. if he is sitting in the middle of the intersection at a green light and just turns his hazards on and gives up - what am i supposed to do. I didnt honk at him, didnt flash my lights - i knew what was exactly wrong, so i just waited for traffic to clear in the other lane and went my way.

and i'm not jealous about his car - i drive a g35 - and could have easily bought an STI if i wanted it. rather - i have respect for the car since it is so god damn fast.

I just thought it was funny because i would think you would learn to drive it first before going on the road - and that also alone.

I had a guy in a Camaro do that once. We both pulled up to the stoplight, and he looks over and starts revving his engine (like I'm gonna race you in my car) and then when the light turned green, bam! stalls it out and it takes him like 10 seconds to restart it, and then of course he wizzes by me at around 75 mph (in a 45).

and agnitrate: why would someone buy a WRX to learn on? That's just mean! You learn on a beater with an almost-shot clutch. Learning to drive stick on a new car, especially a new sports car, is wrong on so many levels

I guess he was set on an STi, because it doesn't have automatic transmission as an option.

I saw some guy stall on a hill by my house, it was like 1am and he couldn't get it going. The hill isn't even that steep. Oh well, I shouldn't laugh, we all have our days.

I do think it's funny that this guy blasts past you because he's cool and has a fast car then stalls at the lights. At least refrain from drawing attention to yourself if you're just learning.

lol I hate driving a manual with my dad. He always acts like he would rather die than rid in the passenger seat. :| I also always end up doing a burnout course he does live in the mountains so not the easiest place to learn with steep hills ah well Ill teahc myself if I ever get a car

I don't know about the STi - I've never driven one - but I will say that, in all fairness to the guy you saw, some cars are much trickier than others to get rolling without stalling. I've been driving stick for 15 years or so, and still occasionally stall my Maxima (maybe once or twice a year), because its clutch has a lot of pedal travel with a very short, abrupt engagement point. I definitely don't do it at every intersection, though, nor would I but something like an STi if I didn't know how to drive stick!

First of all the STi only comes in a 6-SPD manual. Second, I've tried to drive my dad's about 15 times and only once have I gotten into 1st without stalling. Mainly because you barely tap the gas and you're at 4500 rpms. It scares the cr*p out of me. 3rd is also tricky; we've had it since last August and my dad still misses it sometimes.

Then you start slowly letting out the clutch before giving it any gas. Cars with more power are easier to drive, IMHO.

Ahh, the joy of learning how to drive a stick with a diesel, and getting good with a torquey V8 w/ a light rear end. Letting out the clutch too quick on my car usually results in spin. With the diesel, it still f'ing took off.
