buzzing and popping in sound card

It seems obvious to me that I have interference on my built-in sound card that comes from fans and hard drives. What isn't obvious is what has changed. When I first built the machine, I never had these buzzing sounds nor the occasional low pitch pop.

any ideas?

Got an AWE32 ISA card you could use?

Wow! That is ancient. Shouldn't that board be sitting covered in dust in some crappy little art gallery with clock hands attached to its front. I don't have ISA on my board. I seem to recall when I got my MB it said something about having compatability problems with PCI sound cards.

Well, you got a point there.

Another oddity is that I can hear lov-level buzzing sounds that are synchronized exactly with the scroll wheel on my mouse. for each "click" of the scroll wheel, there is a very quiet buzzing thud.
