I hooked up some el-cheapo Philips Magnovox speakers to my Sherwood RD-6105 receiver and I have some audible hum. Like, loud hum. At normal listening levels the audio drowns it out, but if you're close it's really noticeable. Is it just the cheap speakers? Is it the receiver? Some other problem?

To rule out the receiver, try better speakers.
To rule the speakers, try a better receiver.
If that doesn't help, try different speaker cables.
I really have no idea. You need to experiment. That's about the only way to figure it out. Noone can tell you exactly what the problem is without experiencing it first hand. Hope that helps, sorry if it doesn't.

Probably a combination of cheap speakers and possibly your computer as well. Test it by hooking up some headphones (that work decently well) directly to the computer. If the headphones check out, then it's just the speakers. I had this same problem before. My speakers were like the $15 variety, and I could honestly listen to the radio on them when the music was off. A newer $100 set of speakers brought the buzz to a barely audible level, but if I strained I could still hear it. Finally, getting a new computer put to rest all of my buzz problems, and the nice speakers can truly shine. Good luck with yours.

edit: My bad, I thought you were talking about computer speakers. Disregard as you wish.

I guess it's just the speakers. The receiver sounds great with my Sennheisers. So cheap speakers can actually cause buzz?

they could be much more efficient and picking up and grounding problems (heard as a buzz or humm). unplug everything but single source and receiver and try.
