When you google that vin and bring it up on recycler.com, the carfax tab says 1 accident reported.
Wonder if that's legit or just a ploy to get you to pay for carfax

might be a ploy. because 0 accident according to https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/share/177962172

I don't think so... if you click the "Show me the CarFax" straight from the dealership's website, it will show it to you. Here is the accident info:

03/04/2017 New Jersey
Damage Report Accident reported
Involving left rear impact
Involving right front impact

EDIT:

I use these CarFax regularly for a few things... one is obviously to see any worrisome history. But also very useful is they will let you know when the dealership listed it for sale. This helps give you an idea how far the price is from what they paid for it... the newer the listing, the higher the markup and more haggle room available without them taking a loss. Past 2 months and it's dead weight to them and they want it off their loan.

You'll probably have the toughest time in the first week to two weeks of it being in their inventory unless it's the end of the month and they have sales incentives to hit. From what I've learned over the years, dealerships don't want to keep cars past 1 month. This one looks close to 5-6weeks so they probably dropped the price at least once, if not twice.

you're right, i see it now. very strange it was not on cargurus.com. i guess not everything is linked after all.

i called the dealer. the sales guy said it coulda been a fender bender... cause airbags were not deployed. if deployed it would be reported in carfax. is that true?

Yes normally something like that would be reported, but that doesn't mean there wasn't a mistake made. Overall I would not worry about it myself, but you're the one buying the vehicle!

Following junior novelization short poem haiku is based on true events that were based on an actual story based on the song from the 80's

Why Mommy and Daddy traded in their Sienna with only handful of miles on it

Household buy Minivan as daily for wife +kids
Wife's friend buy Forester.
Wife's friend goes on, on and on about her Forester.
Wife begins to hate Sienna because it is a "Minivan" when all the cool moms are now driving Foresters which are eco friendly gluten free acronym something something. Preferably in that weird green because its cool looking.
While talking on the phone with her friend she hits the car in front of her and then gets hit in the rear.
When explaining the accident to her husband\cops\insurance agent\co workers\mom she say "It was a stuck accelerator pedal!!! She heard that all Toyotas do it and she knows someone who experienced the same thing last year or something." After explaining to her husband that she no longer feels safe driving the Sienna, with tears in her eye she mentions that the Subaru Forester is really safe and that they need to trade in the Sienna or risk death in a fiery crash.

Is there a specific trim that you are looking for?

happy to say the search is over n i bought one. i musta wasted about 20hours total.

2016 LE certified pre own with only 21,000 miles. in mint condition.
it was listed at $27,500. i went 2 weeks ago and only willing to pay 25k out the door, registration will be in PA. manager said he can only do 25k list price.
3 days ago, list price dropped to 23.5k!!! called back n asked what's going on, even the sales guy didnt know n surprised too. told him im still interested for 25k otd. he called back and said 25.9k. i suggested how about we meet in the middle of 25,5k. he refused.
so i wrote an email saying 25.5k is final offer or else i wait for from another location to call back. within 5 mins, he called n said lets do 25.5k out the door. done.

I despise the process too, but I think it's worth noting that unless you value your time at hundreds of dollars an hour, you really didn't waste it.
