Buying things with your employee discount, would your co. ever suspect anything?

No, i don't mean buying things in bulk from your company at 40% and selling on ebay, i just mean every once in a while. Say in January, you buy a plasma screen tv, a laptop towards the end of the month, and a TV at the end of the next month. I'm mainly speaking about Sony, do you think they'd watch over employees taking advantage of their employee discounts?

And none of this is to sell, but for family who might want to take part in the deal.

edit - sorry, changed co. to employee discount.

Why would they? Isn't that the point and perks of working for that company? I would use it as much as I can unless they have a specified amount of times that you can use your discount.

Usually you can buy whatever you want. However, if you buy more than you make or buy insane quantities, then I"m sure a flag will come up...

At Best Buy they let you use your discount for yourself, parents, and S.O. They keep reciepts and records of everything that was bought with an employee discount. If an employee starts using his discount alot and spending alot of money, it sets off "flags" in the system and then the employee is put under watch. And believe me, I've seen tons of people get fired for using their discount for friends and ebay and stuff.

I have a buddy that works for a large sporting goods store. His store is VERY strict on their employee purchase program. If the store finds out that he purchased something for anyone besides himself, they will press charges and try to have him arrested for theft.

I personally think it's B.S. It's not like they are "losing" money, they just aren't getting as much as they *could* get.

Meh.

That's different than a company discount. Lots of stores have deals with other stores and change to give employees preferred discounts when shopping there.

I would suggest that you edumacate yourself regarding Sony's policies (believe me, they have one). It is not worth risking your job.

Find out the policy and stick to it.

Depends on what you are buying and the the frequency. If you buy a new Sony Tv every month. They are probably going to look into it.
You company does have a policy and it probably prohibits stuff like that. But once and a while they probably won't care.

But like said before its best to look into the policy and don't abuse the policy. Everyone once and a while. Your job isn't worth
a 40% discount is it. If it is well then by all means.

I had a good friend who worked as a manager at retail clothing store, and they fired her, for not proberly going through the discount procedure for
employee discount purchases. I am not completely sure the procedure, but it went somethingl ike when getting a discount she was required to show
another manager everything she had purchased so that manager could sign off on it for the discount. Not many people followed the discount, but she
did except for once, and they nailed her for it. And she lost her job, and when she tried to appealed the firing, but it went back to violation of the policy
was grounds for termination. Unfortunate, but she did disobey the rules and she learned a huge lesson for it.

Point and perks? Yeah right. Most employers have strict rules about using the employee purchase program to make purchases for non-direct family members.

psssshhh hahaha you guys sound like this is some forum full of computer geeks or something. Dude I say buy whatever you want for whoever, as long as you don't end up buying multiple quantities of the same thing (for yourself or otherwise..), this has been my policy at several retail stores and I've never had a bit of problem with it.

I'll just sit back and laugh when they turn you into the IRS for not reporting either the discount or the money you made selling it as income.

they're pretty uptight about it at best buy... 5% above wholesale is a pretty sweet discount on high mark up items
