Buying potato chips at Target

I went there for some chips this week and the bags are definitely smaller, i think they were 8.75 or 8.5 oz. What happened to all the larger size bags? It seemed like every brand was reduced in size. Is this another case of reduce the portion instead of raise the prices? I get to pay the same for a smaller bag?

Everything in the grocery store has shrunk. Juice cartons used to be 64oz (i think), now they are like 59.5 fl oz. Pretty sure canned tuna has shrunk as well. Chip bags definitely shrunk.
 
Why is anyone surprised by this anymore? We know that they're doing it. We know why they're doing it. What it says about our society makes me sad though.
 
My favorite are the 20 pack of pops instead of the 24. I am certain they are getting lesser minds with this trick, but not me. I've started to buy less pop anyhow, but when I was frequently buying 12/24 packs, the 20 packs started trying to sneak in as if they were a 24.
 
What does it say about society? Dicking with sizes as a cheap price raising trick is one of my big piss offs, but I'm not sure what it says about society as a whole.

It says that we react strongly to the price per package rather than price per unit of product. We're not actually worried about what we're paying for the product itself so much as how the total price "feels" to us. It shows a lack of attention to detail that I find distressing. Eventually we have people like the OP who suddenly do notice it and feel the outrage that he does.

"What the...? I'm paying the same price for less product"? Obviously that's true, and will continue to be true until everyone does the same thing as the OP. Then we'll have to settle with paying more for the same amount. All the portion manipulation that's going on is to stave off that moment. It's somewhat deceptive and shouldn't ever work on anyone. It does though, and I hate to think that people are that dumb.

When I went to Ireland for a week, every random person I met kept talking about how horrible the weather is when it was pretty much the same every damn day.

Not in Minnesota. We had that polar vortex 2 weeks ago with negative 15 for the high, then it hit positive 11 degrees the next week, I wanted to get my shorts out. The weather is always relative.

Yes. That's exactly what it is. But they've been doing this for years. The 1 lb bags get smaller and smaller so that they can keep the price at $3.00 or 3.50 or whatever. Then when the package is as small as they can possibly get away with, they come out with the 1 lb bag again, but for $4.50 or $5.00, with giant lettering proclaiming "New 1 Pound Size!".

They've even managed to knock a few 16ths of an inch off of the width of toilet paper rolls to accomplish the same thing.

I applaud you for having hope - but I've accepted this for a very long time (and I'm too young to see the world thusly - I should still be full of excitement and naivete when I'm in my mid-20s), and honestly see no hope for our future as a species.
The majority of our population can't get anything done well, it takes leadership to push everyone in the right direction. Sadly, the world leadership is not in any better position regarding intelligence and foresight, and we're throwing ourselves down the drain. 🙁

Even worse than that my wife and father in law came back from Menards (save big money) with an oak veneered particle board where 1/16" was cardboard to save money. In another 30 years all houses will use sheets of full cardboard if this keeps up.

Who's to really say it works, because what choice do you have? When the former 16 oz package of something is reduced for the 3rd time and is now 12.5 ounces, you either buy it or you buy a different product. Except exactly the same thing is happening to the other products.

You sometimes have a choice, and when one's available, I take advantage of it, but you're right; the choices are slim.
 
Deal with it.

Out in Virginia they are slowly closing down Targets and replacing them with Walmarts.

Thats like asking for premium gas and getting the alcohol shit in your tank. ANd it costs more for some reason. And they laugh at you too.
 
They are stocking 1.5L soft drink products on our local grocery shelves starting around a week ago. Something like "SAME GREAT TASTE, NEW PACKAGING"

The 1.5L were priced almost identically to the 2L bottles.
