hello, i've decided to try to build my own PC, instead of buying another "prebuilt" one, but i have a question....

i'm buying all the parts from newegg.com, since they seem to have high ratings around here, but i don't understand the terminology being used for their description of some of the Pentium 4 processors. they have them listed for instance as:

"Intel Pentium4 1.8A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus- Retail Box version with Fan (CPU ONLY NO RAMBUS RAM) Model#: BX80532P1800D "

why does it say "cpu only, no rambus ram"? am i missing something here? why would i expect to get rambus ram memory with a CPU anyway? or are they saying this chip shouldn't be used with a motherboard that runs rambus ram?

i really appreciate any help on this one.....thanks!

radiomotion this is just a way to ensure that you know that this doesn't include rdram as intel first introduced all p-4's with rdram included until rambus ram became widely accepted;)

it should be used in the rambus motherboard
EDIT> oops i just realized that this looks like i mean it has to use rdram which is totally untrue sorry i meant that rdram (rambus is acceptable but so is ddr (SDRAM imho is not acceptable at all even though you can use it .);)

sorry guys i didn't think of the implications of what i was answering as i do think ddr is perfectly acceptable but was just responding to :eek:r are they saying this chip shouldn't be used with a motherboard that runs rambus ram?

i will watch more closely in the future;)end edit

also rambus ram must be used in pairs and c-rimms (continuity rimms) must be used in the remaining slots (included with the motherboards)

hope this helps

That's the Northwood P4 1.8Ghz processor. It will work on either DDR or RDR platform. They don't usually sell you Memory included with the processor unless you get some kind of combo deal. Decide whether you want to go with the DDR or RDR, obviously the memory module and the motherboard has to support whichever you want to go with. So, you ain't missing anything.

I am thinking about purchasing a couple P4 1.8A's for some workstations as well ($199 ain't bad!). I'm just pissed that Newegg doesnt sell the Abit BD7 also :(
