thats not how much power he would use. it would be much lower than that but even the rated amps on the 12v when new is only 216 watts. and like I said earlier reviews said it cannont even make its rated amps in real world conditions. so realistically he does not even have 200 watts available for use on the 12v which his system could easily hit under full load.

Which is why i keep saying "Don't push it" 😉

The rest of the components dont all go on the +12v rail so if the +12v rail is good for 18A (like most ~400w PSU's) he is fine. The CPU isnt drawing much and he will be CPU bottlenecked long before he will be using full power on the GTX 460. the 460 uses 101w average 119 peak and 155 MAX. the CPU will be using 45w (i assume it is the 45w TDP version at only 2.16Ghz) that is a MAX of 200w with fans HDD's MB and RAM you are looking at 250-300 maybe... so 430 is fine... IMHO

again that psu does not make 18 amps even when brand new according to a couple of reviews and 90% of the load will be on the 12v line. he would be lucky to get 15 amps on that psu especially being a few years old now. that system can easily pull 180-190 watts just on the 12v line so he is at the very limit.

He is running a 2.16Ghz CPU what game could he play that would stress the GPU to 100% load with that CPU??? I cant think of any...

Anything that isn't past 2008ish he should be OK. Not like the GPU can handle it in the first place.

He would get shit frame rates in most modern games no matter what GPU he had because his CPU will hold him back. therefore you wont get the GTX 460 even close to pulling i would say 50% load. In ANY game.

plenty of games such as Just Cause 2, Metro 2033, Crysis and so on would still push that gpu hard. plus his cpu is going to be maxed out too in any modern game.

The CPU will max out and hold him back long before his GPU can even get into full stride.

thats nonsense for some games. I have tested Just Cause 2 and Metro 2033 with my cpu at 2.0 and my gpu was still getting pushed really hard.

well first off your GPU is 30% slower then the GTX 460....
actually in some games like Just Cause 2 a gtx460 is only about 10-15% faster plus I have my gtx260 oced by over 15%.

again i am just trying to let the guy know he is pushing his luck on that particular psu. I dont want to see him damage his pc.

lets hope the PSU can handle it....

for fun, take up this thread a year from now and tell us if your psu survived it.

Undervolt the cpu. Drop clock speeds of gtx 460 to 675-700mhz. Unplug any unnecessary fans. Don't run over a couple hard drives.

Or just buy a decent 600w power supply for $60 and be done with it.

600w? for a single GTX 460 and a 45w TDP CPU? are you joking? OP if you are worried about the PSU just go ahead and pick up this antec.

I don't like cheap stuff and he could reuse it down the road. I've been using a 850w antec quattro for a couple years now. It powered a q9400 and gtx 260 216 at one time. A lot of people would of said its overkill. Now that same psu is powering an overclocked i7 and an overclocked gtx 580 with like 4 hard drives. Good thing I bought a good psu to begin with. Luckily my psu had the two 8 pin pci power connectors my direct 2 cu gtx 580 needs. :ninja:

he did not say that his current pc required that much power. I believe he was just suggesting getting a strong psu so he would not have this issue again anytime soon. a good psu can just be transferred to a new build you know.

EDIT: damn I type slow...

Sorry, I forgot to mention that while I was there I did pick up a PSU (still in the box atm) as I figured there was a high % chance I would put the video card in and the thing wouldn't even fire up on this PSU

This is what I grabbed: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...573&CatId=1483

I guess I gotta decide now if I want to install it or ride this out. Been working perfectly fine in WoW for a couple of hours now

install the psu and its never good to risk damaging other components just to see if something will work. that's especially true in this case where you are likely within a few watts of that psu being maxed.

Oh, he did buy a PSU, nice =)

Enjoy your upgraded system then.

OC that baby, if it's an E6400(as i think), you should be able to get 3.0GHz problem free.
