looking at the yamaha 16X10X40, are these in the same league as plextor drives? I missed the Iomega deal so looks like I am gonna spend over 200.00 for what I want any advice would be appreciated.

I am going to look up the burn proof technology in a sec, is this similar

Waste-Proof Write StrategyThis exclusive write strategy maximizes stability of the recording environment by combining a large buffer memory, CAV writing support for on-the-fly data backup, and specific fine-tunings to the recording software, resulting in elimination of buffer underruns and waste of media.

i would suggest burn-proof drives too (tdk makes a 16x/10x ide that has burn-proof, as well as a 12x/10x - which plextor also makes)...this is, unless u're only gonna be burning rewritable media, in which case, u can't really make a coaster out of it...

but if u like to multitask whilst burning - then burn-proof is good, otherwise, don't get it, but hope your system can put out data fast enough (i.e. dma enabled)

that DOESN'T sound like burn-proof, but yamaha's (if that's where u got it from) way of endorsing large buffer (i.e. 8MB) drives instaed of burn-proof technology adoption.

8MB buffers won't eliminate buffer underruns, but it will reduce them compared to drives w/ smaller buffers (i.e. 4mb, 2mb, etc.)..

burn-proof is still A LOT better than large buffers.

Personally I'm not terribly concerned about BURN proof.
My 8x8 Yamaha has a 4MB buffer and I can ICQ, Surf and Email while it's burning no problem. I can't play games, but I can wait 10 minutes...I probably wouldn't play a game while burning anyways.

Plextor makes the nicest drives around but they are expensive. I prefer Yamaha because they are also excellent drives and are much cheaper. I'd go with one of those two myself. Yamaha for the price, or if you to a heck of a lot of burning go Plextor. I do maybe 3-5 CDs/month so a Plextor is hardly worth the price for me...but if you do alot I'd recommend it.

Have a look at this thread it may help you make your decision. I'm in a similar position as you. Yamaha or Plextor, em....decision decisions.....

I have a Yamaha CDRW 4260 SCSI writer and I don't get buffer underruns at all, but I'm only writing at 4x so that may answer that.

Read the review of the Yamaha drive at CD Info's Site. it may also help in you decision.

learning lots here quick folks very much appreciated, I have a creative6424 AKA Ricoh that does a pretty good job, but kinda slow for me.
have eliminated coasters after flashing back to Ricoh and using clone cd.
Nortex I think Ill be ok on the system, building new one with tbird @1200 on MSI K7T Pro2-A, 256mb mosel cas2,IBM GXP 30gig ata100, gforce2 gts etc etc.

No actually that's courtesy the I/O effeciency of SCSI. Even 12x SCSI drives don't really need burnproof. IDE needs it because it's not a very effecient multitasking protocol. SCSI is :)

I'd recommend the AOpen 1232 12/10/32 CD-RW. Isn't Burnproof, but sells for around $160, which is a good $50-$100 cheaper than burnproof drives. And really, coasters are a thing of the past with CD-R and CD-RW drives, unless you insist on running defrag while burning or something silly like that.

oh, that AOpen drive is possibly the fastest 12x IDE cdrw available...according to some pc magazine's benchmarks...dont' recall the exact mag or issue.
