I've been trying to figure this out forever to no avail. I've tried three different routers and no router (directly into PC) and the problem is still there. It happens mostly when I am using heavy bandwidth. Originally I thought it was limited to torrents because of the large number of connections, but it happens with Usenet binary downloads as well.
I previously checked some signal levels and was told they looked fine or better than fine - see this thread
Since then, I tried a friend's router (Linksys, some Wireless model), and a new one of mine (TP-Link TL-WR740). These both gave me the same problem as my original Dynex router. I also tried directly connecting, same problem.
Simply unplugging the cable modem for a few seconds and plugging it back in ALWAYS fixes the problem within a moment. Unplugging the router doesn't seem to have any effect one way or another.
The modem is some cheap generic-type brand, so I'm wondering if it's simply seen it's better days and is overheating, or otherwise crapping out.
Should I buy a new one, and what type? The cheaper the better, without sacrificing quality.
The other option is to keep bugging the cable company. It's not their modem, though -- it was from another company in my last city. So they may just say I need to replace that before anything else, since my levels are showing good.
