Oh I forgot something. You need to learn this early on, as there are others spreading this misinformation.

IT'S NOT A CLIP! ONE MORE TIME. IT'S NOT A CLIP!

There we go... It's called a magazine, that is unless your first gun is a Mosin Nagant. Then you load the clip into the magazine.

If David Carridine was not into such Kinky sex you could ask him Young Grasshopper.

I kid but seriously I thought he was a great actor and grew up watching Kung Fu

So you're worried about your "image" while at the range? Weak

not really, but i view a revolver in the way i do a shotgun or rifle. shotguns, rifles, and revolvers, and cliploading pistols all do the same thing, but im intersted in a clip pistol.

There is no such thing as a clip loading pistol. You want a magazine loading pistol.

You are going to have a hell of a time finding a semi-auto that uses clips. You can get revolvers in .45 ACP and the like that use moon clips to hold the rounds in the cylinder, but I haven't seen a semi-auto that works like that.

You can get a wide range of semi-autos that use magazines though.

As well as ammo availability. Popular sizes, like 9mm, are increasingly difficult to find these days.

YoungGH if you just want range time and want to get a good one I would look at the Ruger Mark III and take some lessons at the range.

You can afford to shoot all day and get good at it. By the time you get good at it and are ready to move up you will know exactly what you want and still have a great gun that is cheap to shoot.
Also if your basement is big enough you can get a bullet trap for the Ruger to shoot at home.

There are actually a few fixed magazine, top loading pistols out there. Most from earlier in the 1900s.

Not True! Mauser Broomhandle, A more contemporary example would be Grendel P-10!

To OP, find something that feels good in your hand, that you enjoy shooting:)

As long as you don't like Jennings, Raven, or High Point, that is sound advice.

I like my Hi Point for a cheap range gun. Sure is an ugly thing though.

I was referring more to the device in which contains the rounds, aka the mag, being called a clip. But yes, I misspoke.

the best advice ive read is to go try them out and pick for myself. one question though is, is there any brands to stay away from? also costs of maintenance/replacement parts? are there any manufacturers that replacement/maintenance parts cost more than the other? for example co-worker of mine told me glock has lots of aftermarket accessories for it....etc...

If you don't care about self defense and just want something to play with at the range I'd go with a .22LR target pistol. The ammo is cheap and they're low recoil/easy to shoot. Ruger makes a nice one.

as far as recommendations, i did my research and found that a glock 17/19 was the best way to go. half the people tell me glocks are good and the other half say theyre cheaply made. my uncle recommended me to get a walther p99. when i mention this pistol to people everyone seems to agree its a great pistol.

i dont particularly like glocks... but it's a personal thing.

the walther P99 is an excellent gun.

I'm not sure I would suggest a noobie buy a used gun unless they have someone go along with them that is knowledgeable. If you get it at a reputable shop you'd probably be fine but I'd be very wary at a gun show. also, gun shows are not cheap, at least not since Obama got elected. in fact, nothing firearms related is cheap since he got elected.
