Seriously, they're good machines for the purpose - at least the 12" models are. Long battery life, good wireless range, and you don't need to exert much effort to secure them against attacks. I also like the neat touches like the rounded edges (good for sitting it on your lap) and the instant sleep/wake when you operate the lid.
Two caveats: first, there may well be an iBook update in April, and even if it's modest it may give you 512 MB of RAM stock. The second caveat is that if you buy now, you'd want to custom-order it from Apple's website (be sure to do it through their education section if you're a college/university student!) with a 60 GB drive. You can always get the extra RAM from a 3rd-party like Crucial; upgrading the hard drive is much harder.
If you'll consider an apple I believe you still can get the last gen 12" powerbook for a pretty good price via the edu store... something like $1100 or $1300... if they still have any left. If not I definitely think the iBook fits the bill for the price 🙂 Elegant design and very functional/intuative/secure OS has some value 🙂

There's a lot of cheap laptops that are posted there; right now a Gateway for like $700 AR. Not too shabby
