Don't buy Sony. If you do, make sure you buy an extended warranty. The current Sony is not the Sony of old.

Just think about Krell, wadia, M&K, B&W etc...and you'll be fine:D

haha just kidding, for home theater in a box, the yamaha sets and the onkyo sets are hard to beat.

For speakers, look at paradigm, axiom, psb; many things from canada sound very good for the money.
For receivers, look at denon, HK, pioneer elite, onkyo, yamaha.
cables, well, make your own out of carnare wire and get some good connectors/terminators.

I think I'll probably go with a whole set in a box. I dont feel like mixing and matching and to be honest, I just want some decent sound. I'm not looking to shake the whole apartment building. A think a set will fill up my small living room quite well (12'x10' approx).

Did you know that all local channels in NYC are now broadcasting HDTV in full power now? I live in NJ, and get then all with a $20 antenna. How do you get your channels now?

I'm on Time Warner cable.

*edit - how many OTA channels can you get with that antenna?
I get all the major ones, 2,4,5,7,9,11 but not 13, because it doesn't broadcast from the ESB yet, and it's not using full power. I also get some spanish stations, but I almost never watch them.

You should have plenty of HDTV choices with TWC.
