Buying First LCD

I've been looking into getting a new 19" LCD, I'd like to spend up to 500 on it. It will be for 80% Gaming, 15% DVD/TV (PVR250) and 5% Image Editing(the least important of my worries...). I've been doing my research and have narrowed it to the following:

Samsung 930BF - Nice and fast, but the image is SO bleached compared to others!

Viewsonic
VP191B - been hearing good things about this bad larry, but of course its discontinued...

VX924 - I've heard mixed, and tom's hardware states that its actual latencies are nothing to what viewsonic claims them to be... But on the other side, the colors are more vibrant than a lot of the other monitors

VP930B - I've read up that it isn't that much better than the 191B, and actually falls short of it (supposed to be the 191's replacement) (nice contrast ratio though)

VX922 - Fastest LCD around, but I'm not to sure about it, they've had to have sacrificed something to get that 2ms response...


Any input would be great, especially any first person facts about any of these!! 😀

 
The VP930b and VP191b are the best of those LCDs. I have the VP930b and it's great for gaming, video, and image editing. I'd stay clear of the VX models since they are 6-bit panels. They're good for gaming and web surfing, but I wouldn't use them for any kind of image/graphics work.

Another monitor you should seriously consider is the Samsung 970P. It looks to be a awesome LCD.
 
Do not get 930BF. It doesn't only have washed out colors but also pays for its speed with terrible image artifacts which you can read about on xbitlabs.

Do not get VX922 (IMO). It doesn't seem worth the price premium because the contrast difference of 100 will be hard (impossible?) to spot, its color calibration out of the box seems worse than VX924's, plus the difference between 3 and 2 ms gtg will be absolutely academic, as you can read (and see on screenshots) on hardware.fr.

VP191b is discontinued so I'd get either VX924 or VP930b.

It all depends on your needs. I have no idea whether you'll be more happy with slightly higher responsiveness in gaming provided by the VX or better viewing angles (particularly low vertical) and full 8-bit color and better ergonomy (swivel, pivot, tilt, height adjustment) delivered by the VP.
 
I own the Samsung 970P and it is an awesome LCD. Expensive but i havent found a flaw with it yet compared to my old LCD (VP912B). No backlight bleeding. No ghosting. No dead pixels (yay). Vibrant colors. Dark blacks.

I heard the VP930B can have some minor backlight bleeding. But it is $100 cheaper than the 970P... I say both are good options. Just depends if you want to spend the extra $100
 
So I should go with an 8-bit panel?

As for viewing angles and response...
I'd like a blend, I'd like to be able to play games, but it will be used for a TV so I hope I will be able to see it sitting 6-7 feet from it (don't know about vertical angles I will be at..) Would the VP930B be able to suffice to all these needs?

I checked out the 970P and I don't really like the setup of it..
 
I'm just worried about how it will handle gaming, does anyone have any first hand experience with this and BF2/CSS? I was reading Tom's Hardware review about it and they said it was nice, but in movies they detected some "noise"? The white-black-white response time is also 20ms (its a little slower than the 191).

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get my first one as well. I have a VX924 here in the house (my cousin's) and I even used it for a good month myself. Having been a CRT user, the first time I loaded up CS:S on it, I did see motion blur since I had never seen it before, and considering we paid the premium for a "4ms" monitor I was kind of surprised to see that.

HOWEVER, its not a big deal at all. That was the one and only time I actually NOTICED it. Fact is, your more concerned with playing the game then the little ghosting there is, (and its hardly there). Other that that minor quirk, I can definately say the color is OUTSTANDING. On everything. Games (Wow, CS:S, Starcraft eve) and even movies (just watched clips of Gladiator on it, and the color is something really amazing).

Unfortunately they are out of stock here.

So, I took a stroll to the local retail outlets here, and I really like the screen of this

It has a glossy screen, much like the one most laptops have converted to, and it makes a world of difference when you look at the desktop on it, and place it right next the same desktop of other LCD screens. One other advantage is, at Compusa, Bestbuy, and CircuitCity websites, its $550 with a $100 rebate. However in the Best Buy store here, I dont know if they screwed up or what, the ticket says $550 w/ $200 in rebates...at $350 what do you guys think?

Only thing I'm concerned about is that it has a 12ms response time, but like I said above, if its like the Viewsonic, I don't care. I'm not that picky, but if its alot more ghosting then the viewsonic then thats a different story. As far as the glare, it won't be a problem for me as I got my blinds closed.

The Xbrite screen really does make a huge difference though...

Tom's Hardware did test the VX924 and they said the actual latency is NOTHING like Viewsonic advertised
 
What does the 16ms VP171B (the first model) use bit wise? is it 6 or 8? I have one but i could never be sure what it was.
 
Having played several FPS games on my VP930b I can tell you that it there is some slight motion blurring. This issue doesn't really affect game play, but it can be bothersome for some people that want CRT-like response. I think you'd have to be VERY picky for it to bother you. And if it truly does then you shouldn't even consider buying an LCD.

 
I eneded up ordering a vx924 yesterday. There have been some issues posted about backlight bleeding, but for $299 after rebate (at zipzoomfly.com), it seems like a tough screen to beat. The other one I considered was the Samsung 940b, which looks to be another really nice screen. Only thing is that it is $345 + a dvi cable (if you don't already have a cable and plan on using dvi). The LCD buyers guide at the top of the screen recommends it as well.
Again, for me, it wasn't worth a $75 price difference to justify the difference though. I think a lot depends on how picky you are and how good of an eye you have for some of this stuff. Me, not knowing the difference really, figure that most any screen will look really nice to me. I thought my Hyundai L90D+ looked great. Too bad it developed the vertical line issues...
 
Well I am red/green colorblind so color isn't that much of an issue for me, as long as they are deep and rich, but I can pick out other things. I was looking at my friends 17" yesterday and picked it apart lol
