Buying chip for overclocking- E6750 or allendale?

Hi, all. I'm building a rig this christmas, and I wanna know what's a good conservative estimate on what I can get out of the chip. I want to run the FSB at 1600 Mhz with the memory at 1200 (3:4) or 1066 (2:3). With the E6750 the processor will be running at 3.2Ghz, which I'm pretty sure I can hit with air cooling. (Zalman CNPS9500)

If I use an allendale, the lowest multiplier newegg is selling (I dunno about everywhere else) is x10. (2 Ghz, FSB 800 Mhz) With that, the processor is going to be running at a ridiculous 4 Ghz, which I wouldn't go to even if I could. So, what does everyone suggest? I want my fast memory, but I don't want to destroy a chip trying to overclock it. Help is greatly appreciated.


On a side note, the RAM is a 4Gb 2x2 Mushkin kit. (with blue heat spreaders) It runs at 800Mhz 5-4-4-12. From what I've heard, DDR2 has no problems going well past 1066.

You could go with an E2140. At 400FSB, that's 3.2Ghz, a respectable overclock for that chip. Best of all, it only costs $60 at Microcenter.

There's really very little real-world impact from running your memory at higher speeds.

Your linky just proved otherwise.

This is the best evidence you will find to prove that increasing memory speed does increase performance - even to DDR2-1067 and beyond. "

i have an e4400 m0 stepping.

i cant really overclock much on my board at all, but i did a pin mod to 2.66 @ default volts. i woudl figure on a real o/c board with better cooling than a stock intel retail you could do 3.33 ghz @ 1333 bus at like 1.4 volts or so.

The E6750 is a good OC'er just like anything else, the only reason I would pick it over some of the less expensive EXXX chips is because it's got 4mb of L2 (good for gaming). Mine is running with a 31% OC @ 3.5Ghz with 1:1 ratio... Temps never go higher then 61c and it only goes above 60c during the 8k test in SP2004, on air w/tuniq tower.
