Also, matters where you live. I really don't think I would get a manual if I did lots of city driving, particularly in a city like San Francisco..haha.

More country driving? Go with manual.
Yeah, manual in San Fran isn't fun. I spun my tires quite a bit on a rainy day once (obviously before I had a Subaru;)).

There's always the hill-holder clutch;)

Why did subaru ever stop that anyways? It was a neat idea, and it sure would make manual driving a lot more enjoyable.
You can still get it on the Forester

Nah they discontinued it.
Uh, I just checked Subaru.com before posting...the Forester XT has it at least....didn't check the other trim levels.

jesus...everyone thinks their paul walker these days..."I NEED NOS!"

I drive a stick, but seriously let people drive what they want. My next car may even be a "grownup luxury car" like a TL or IS, auto of course (so i'm not the only one who can drive it).

I'm sure the advances in engineering have supported this to some degree, but I think there has also been a move on the part of the car companies to de-emphasize the difference. After all, it is in their best interest to promote their more expensive product. And we have heard lately that the EPA ratings are flawed and don't really reflect the way we drive. I'm thinking if they did they would reflect a greater difference between manual and automatic: driving manual gives you the control that is the foundation of efficient driving habits.

And you dont have that control with an automatic - why? If you think you are better in saving fuel noone keeps you from shifting manually with an automatic

You never now what the previous owner did to the manual transmission. Auto might be a safer pruchase unless there's a full warranty on it or something like that.

Its not necessarily true that manual saves gas now. For example the auto Mazda6 is rated to have better gas mileage than manual.

Probably an automatic. At least that way you won't have to replace the clutch!

Of course, I am no where near being an auto expert. That's just my opinion. I've had both.
Clutch job is cheaper than a rebuild on a slushbox.

QFT... clutches are much cheaper than auto parts and labor..

Manual will be less problematic. Replacing a clutch isn't very expensive and if you take care of it and don't grind the gears a manual will last many many trouble free years.

I know people who've replaced the tranny on American cars before they've hit 50k on them. Not saying they're all like that but I'd go with a manual over an auto any day.

I will NEVER own a car with an automatic transmission. At least not until I turn 70 (I am 32 now). :)

I would consider a true SMG transmission (ala M3, M5, M6), but I wouldn't like it over a regular manual.

m6???

A car with a manual trans will always give you more power at the wheels and better MPG and if you know how to drive it properly the clutch wont have to replaced till you hit 150K which at that point is when a auto will give out. Then you will save more to replace the clutch because clutch replacement in almost all cases is going to be cheaper then replacing a automatic trany.

How much gas do you save using manual transmission?
