I finally have room to get a larger bed, and I see a ton of them on Craigslist. Is buying a used mattress for around $100 a good idea, and if so what should I look for to know whether fire is the best option for the one I'm looking at vs. a good one to bring home?

Well, for $100 it's probably older, and you can probably bet some kid (or adult) has peed and/or splooged on the bed before. If you don't mind that (and the possibility of insects you can't see) then go for it.

If you have a giant steam cooker to kill off the bed bugs, sure.

Otherwise, you can find cheap mattresses (new) at Costco or on clearance at department stores.

Would you take an old mattress from you parents? Think about what went on there!

Only buy from people you know. I bought a nice 6 mo old queen pillow top, box spring, and frame from my old boss for $300. They got it when they got married and soon realized it was too small. Although it was a hell of a bargain, the thought of him and his new bride losing their V cards on it still haunts me every now and then.

I wouldn't do it. Too gross for me. I wouldn't take my parent's mattress either. That plus I am particular about mattresses and I am all about the whole try it before you buy it thing with them.

***EDIT***

I also recommend saving up to buy a good mattress if you have the income to do so (In other words, not in college anymore). The difference that a good mattress can do for you in terms of how much more energy you have during the day and the lack of back pain is well worth the cost.

I would add bedsheets and pillow cases to that list. Hell, I wouldn't buy used clothing of any kind actually.

Does it come with a dead hooker? :p

....otherwise then no!

What if a hooker peed on the mattress?
Offer 50% extra instead of only 75% extra?

If you listen carefully to the springs, you can still hear the cries of ecstasy echoing through them.
