I don't own any macs, I run a vm of one but have almost no hardware knowledge of it. I'm interested in getting a used one just to learn more about it. I found a used one with alpplecare, does applecare just follow the machine or do I need to get the seller to transfer that to me?

I have bought machines in the past covered with Apple care, and never had to transfer anything. The warranty goes with the serial number of the machine. Yes, in theory the owner can transfer the warranty to another similar device within 30 days as the above article explains, and essentially screw you out of your warranty. If you want to avoid that risk, then yes, you would need the owner to move the Apple care registration to your name. You can also avoid this by buying a machine that has less than the full 3 years of apple care left. Then the original owner wouldn't be able to do anything.
