Buying a used Half-Life 2 account

Several people in the FT/FS area are selling used Steam accounts...one guy is telling me that all he will do is hand over the username and password and I am all set.

I dont buy it, there must be some sort of security in place to keep people from sharing accounts right?

I mean Joey in school could buy HL2 and share it with all of his buddies otherwise.....Valve is not that stupid.

Help me out here, id love to save a few bucks and buy a used account but I want to be sure its a safe deal.

thank in advance

I've wondered the same - I guess thats the bad part of steam. When I'm done with HL2, can I uninstall HL2, and install it on another computer (a friends) and let them play it, just as if i had given them the game(read: CD) for free, AND still be able to play CS:S etc?

I don't understand why it's such an issue. I own a copy of halflife 2, and I had thought about selling it as well. If I give you the username + password, all you have to do is change the password and security question/email and i'll no longer have any sort of access to the account whatsoever. The only "issue" is its against their EULA policy, but that's a bullsh!t policy to begin with. EULA's never stopped people from selling accounts, so if that's the only issue then it's a nonissue imo.

Nope, all CDKey's you've registered to your steam account are TIED INTO your steam login/password, that's all you need to access your games from any computer that has an internet connection. That's why they made steam.. Also there's not many people that get caught for breaking EULA's look at all the people selling MMO Items/Accounts, it's just the same. There's nothing protecting them from someone else using the account, it's just like borrowing the game from a friend.

Um, you make it sound like it's difficult for Valve to figure out that two different users/computers are or have been logging into Steam.

Thats my thinking as well...this day and age youd think a bid company like Valve would crack down on this sort of thing.

My luck, id buy a used account and get it shut down a month later rendering my games useless.

In theory, you could buy the account, download the game, and then play the singleplayer mission in "offline" mode. Even if they banned the account you should still be able to finish it. But then again you'd never be able to play online or get updates.

Not sure how well this works, so as always, YMMV.

The irony of someone called "BentValve" posting a thread about a shady Half-Life 2 deal is just killing me..... 😛

It may be against EULA but its hard to prove as long as the seller doesn't try to access the account again. You just have to make sure the account isn't opened with a stolen credit card or some kind of fraudulent activity.
