Buying a used car with an auto loan

I use to live in Central California and had membership to a credit union there through my dad. Now I'm working and residing in Southern California but decided to apply for my auto loan through this credit union because they usually give better rates than other banks.

Now that I've been preapproved by them, what do I need to do to complete the loan? Most likely I will be purchasing the car from a private owner in the S. California area. Will the buyer and I have to go into a branch location to finish the loan process? This will be a big inconvience if we have to becaue I work full time and can't afford to take a day off to go up there. I'm sure it'll be a real hassle for the buyer as well. What other options do we have to avoid having to go into the bank?
