Buying a Toyota Tacoma, need advice on buying accessories!

Hi folks,

I am probably going to jump in and buy my first car (as in completely financed by me) in the next week or two and was wondering about what I should do about accessories. BTW I am looking at getting a 03' Toyota Tacoma DoubleCab PreRunner Double Cab TRD.

The only accessories I am interested in getting at the moment are:

Bedliner: Thinking about getting a Line-X bedliner $$? vs adding at the dealership for $299
Bed Extender: to make up for the shorter bed on the doublecab Tacomas~ Considering getting a kit for around $200 vs buying from the dealership for $282
Car Alarm: No idea what do to here, how good are Toyota alarms?
(Maybe) LoJack

My question is whether or not I'd be better off trying to get these (or particular items) in the aftermarket or through the Toyota dealership. Ideally, I'd like to go through the least hassle possible without getting gouged by the dealership. I'm not especially mechanically inclined if that affects your advice at all.

Thanks :)

Mudguards. If you feel risky, try the ones with Yosemite Sam or the girl on them in chrome.

I'd personally tint the rear windows and a rhino sprayed liner.

I was actually thinking about getting the V6, why would you reccommend against it?

V6s just don't make enough power for a truck IMO, a truck should have enough power to haul stuff around or tow a car on a trailer and still be able to merge safely onto the freeway.

ditto.

bedliner - i suggest a bedrug if your not going to be dropping a bucket full of dirt or rock back there... would have to get some sort of a bedcover though.
bed xtender - get the kit, they are cake, too me 15 min to install mine.
security system - compustar http://www.compustar.org/ i got the 2wss-as installed on my 00' F150 and it was some of the best money i have ever spent.

Well it's up to him, but he asked for advice, and my advice was "get a bigger motor" :)

Ah, I see where you are coming from. Unfortunately, V6 is the most powerful I can get on a Tacoma and I really don't plan on the doing the hauling necesary to justify getting anything approaching a Tundra. At most, I will be hauling furniture around town and taking gear and friends up to the Sierra's to go camping/boarding.

I just wanted something that was a little more versatile than a SUV and not too big. The Tacoma seems like a good fit.

Anyway, is the a line-x bedliner overkill for my purposes? I know they are supposed to be very good, but would I be better off investing the money in some other accessory?

Thanks for the comments

Prerunners with a V6 or non-prerunner 4x4...

My friend went for the non-prerunner 4x4 4 banger, I think he made the right choice. Sure it's not worth much for towing, but it can get out of its own way and the 4wd is nice. Prerunner just shouts "Weeeeeee, look at me, I'm a no 4wd pussy truck, watch me get stuck!" :D

what exactly do you plan on hauling with your truck? nothing? get a taneu (sp?) cover and don't bother with a bedliner... small things, tv's, furniture, tool boxes... nothing dirty, definatly go with a bedrug... hauling rocks? wood chips? dirt? sand? anything messy? get line-x... cleanup is as simple as hosing it down... then again i can zip apart my bedrug and throw it in the washer... :)

I didn't realize Toyota doesn't even offer a V8 in the Tacoma. If the V6 is the biggest motor you can get, and you're set on getting a Tocoma, definitely get the V6 :)

Personally, if I was buying a new truck, I'd get an F-150, but that's jsut me.

If you're not planning on hauling much with it, you may not need the bedliner. Are you going to be putting a lot of stuff back there that's going to scratch it up? Snowboard bags and camping supplies aren't going to do any real damage to your bed.

The PreRunner 4x4 vs 4x2 thing has been a source of contention for me. I dont plan on doing much (if any) towing and I won't be carrying anything especially heavy. It would be really nice having the security of 4x4 when I up to the mountains in the winter. But since it doesnt snow here in the valley, and the highway up is usally pretty clear, I just couldn't justify spending an extra $2,500 for something I might use when I could just get a nice set of chains for $75.

Thanks for the tip on the bed rug, I didn't consider that, I might just go with that in lieu of the bedliner. I'll also investigate the taneu cover. Thanks

access covers are the best, imo. mind you... a lot of the accessories you would be looking at can be installed by yourself, an extra set of hands always helps though :). i installed my access2 cover and bedrug in about 1 hr, cost me 75 bucks less and saved about 2 hours (not having to drive all the way up to the store, wait for the them to install it, drive back)

i bought the bedliner in my tacoma (oem) for about $150 installed. they're definately ripping you on that. see if you can bargain that down a little.

the bedliner is nice because when you actually do haul stuff, it could scratch the paint and it looks ugly (thats what happened to me :()

Where do you work? There's an office max, home depot, gas station, and some office buildings that I think are some medical company or something....

You work like 1/2 mile from my house. :)
