Well, the wife and I are thinking ahead and are trying to buy a stroller for our first baby. We would like to get one of the combo car seat/carrier/stroller models....

Any recommendations?

we bought the Eddie Bauer stroller car seat combo.

The car seat was heavy and the stroller is huge! while the stroller is nice for going to the park or mall. it doesnt make sense to have it as a every day stroller. Oh and make sure it fits in the car. We had a escort at the time and the stroller would not fit in the car at all. But thats ok we were in the process of finding a larger car.

Not to mention you can find the same combo unit without the eddie bauer tag for far less then we paid.

If you have a large vehicle to carry around the stroller the combo is great. Its nice to un-hook the carseat from the base of the car and plop it in the stroller and with a baby the car seat was nice because i could do it inside and not worry about trying to buckle a newborn in the car.

I have a '99 Oldsmobile Cutlass. However, we are looking at diving into the Mini-Van world already. We think it would give us more flexibility later.

don't spend too much money on it, as your baby is likely to out grow the car seat pretty quickly. look at what the car seat is rated for... anything less than 20 pounds will be a waste of time. Look for an ergonomic handle, as lifting the baby in the seat will work muscles you didn't know you had.

Strollers have two major problems. Wheels are too small, and there for are jarring every time you roll over a crack or bumb. They also take up a lot of room.

Damn! Been about 15 years since we shopped for one. My first priority was large diameter wheels, to step over ruts and holes. After that, one that folds quickly. I thing it was Graco that got our business.

How about something like this: BabyTrend Expedition

NOTE: I like all all of the strollers I have seen are named like they are a 4x4.

interestingly my wife and i just spent 6 hours at babies 'r us this past saturday looking at just this type of stuff. we settled on the evenflo portabout 5 infant car seat($89.99) and the evenflo comfort dimensions plus stroller($79.99). they can be used separately or combined to form a travel system. they were both pretty well recommended on http://www.babiesrus.com and we tried the other ones for comfort and ease of use. i strongly suggest trying stuff out in the store because a few of the other seats and strollers didn't make the cut because we didn't like the handle on the car seat or we had a tough time removing it from the car seat base or it was difficult to put away with only one hand, etc., and other reasons you can't determine unless you're actually in the store. a less expensive route is to get a car seat and just a universal frame that holds pretty much all car seats with adjustments. it's a lot lighter but can not be used as a stroller. graco and evenflo seemed to be the two most widely recommended brands and other people in the store who already had purchased items agreed that those were the 2 best brands.

that's another reason to go to the store. you can ask people who are walking around who already own the products. we got about 3 or 4 personal recommendations that way along with caveats for different products.

if you have any other questions feel free to pm me.

I've got a Peg Perego which is ok. We don't use it anymore since our babies got too big for it. We have a Maclaren now for one of the babies. It works very well but is pricey.

Make sure you try out the stroller before you buy and don't go by looks alone. Some strollers are designed so poorly. We bought this one stroller which looked ok but was a few inches too low for me and gives me back pains when I push it.

might I suggest looking into a baby carrier like a Baby Bjorn?? These are much more fun than strapping in your baby to the seat then leaving him or her in there until he/she needs food/diaper change/etc just get a baby carrier like a bjorn! We decided against the combo strollers when we looked at strollers a year ago for our boy. even today, though he has just about outgrown the bjorn, he loves it. We get to do some serious cuddle time in it, and there are just alot of fond memories having him strapped to me while we go out exploring or whatever.

also you are going to realize that a cheap 20-30 dollar folding stroller is just as useful if not moreso than one of those big ones (even with a cup holder!) Picture trying to get all your things out of the combo stroller and into the car AND then folding the stroller and shoving it into your SUV or trunk all in the rain... believe me our little 30 dollar cheapy stroller got its moneys worth even after we tried using our big ol dual stroller ( i think it was called a baby limosine??)

LOL we tried em all! good luck and congrats.

IMHO, forget the stroller, get a baby sling instead. My wife & I had a stroller but we found that we used the baby sling almost exclusively. The stroller was just too big & bulky to carry around anywhere, and we found that our son didn't like to ride in it much. The sling offers the same means of transport at a fraction of the weight. Plus if you or your wife is ever needing to do stuff around the house, but baby doesn't want to be alone, it lets you carry the baby with you leaving your hands free. Granted, you still need to get an infant car seat, but I just think the sling is much handier than a stroller. Just another idea in case you hadn't known about it!

Another one at Amazon.com

Ditto on the sling suggestion! They are the best! Also agree on the large diameter wheels and easy folding for strollers. Small wheeled strollers are only usable in places like malls that have no impediments on the floor. The wheels get caught on the slightest surface imperfection outside. Most importantly, make sure the handles are at the appropriate height. I killed my back with a cheapo that was too low. I ultimately went with a jogging stroller for exercise with my last kid (didn't want to jiggle baby too much), a sling for most other times, and a Davis Station Wagon (aka Burley bike trailer) for long trips around town with both kids (sometimes used the third wheel stroller adapter on it to walk with both kids contained.)

Worry more about the stroller, the car seats that come with them are for infants and if you are lucky they might last till 5-6 months old max. As for a stroller if you are ever going to use it on anything aside from sidewalks/malls then get one with bigger whells so it rolls better in the dirt/grass. You don't have to get one with huge wheels like a jogging one but dont get one with tiny wheels. That was the advice I got from a friend of mine and I am soooo happy that I did that, the one we got rolls great, but then if I forget and only bring the tiny umbrealla stroller it is a pita. Hope it helps, if you want to know the model I will be home Wed and can tell you. Also when your baby gets bigger get make sure you get a car seat with some padding in it, there are a lot out there that are as hard as a rock. Feel them and think of how would you like to sit in that for X hours.

I bought a peg perego milano, slightly used, on ebay. They usually sell for $350 and up and I got it for $112. It's a stroller/carriage combo. You can buy the primo viaggio car seat separately and a car seat attachment to use with the stroller.

Found this on preconception.com website:

CPSC, Maya Wrap Announce Recall of Infant Carriers/Slings

WASHINGTON -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Maya Wrap, of Omaha, Neb., is voluntarily recalling about 5,000 infant carriers/slings. The welds of the metal rings that support the carriers/slings can break, posing a fall hazard to young children.

Maya Wrap has received 20 reports of the rings breaking. The company received a report that one child fell to the ground but no injuries were reported.

The recalled carriers/slings are made of 100 percent cotton fabric with two metal support rings. The rings measure 1/8-inch in width. They were sold in a variety of colors, prints and sizes. A large white label sewn in the slings reads in part, ?MAYA WRAP? and ?ECHO EN GUATEMALA.?

Web sites and individual distributors nationwide sold these carrier/slings from January 2001 through July 2001 for between $30 and $40. Also, eight children?s boutiques in various states sold these carrier/slings.

Consumers should stop using these carriers/slings immediately and call Maya Wrap at (800) 501-9979 anytime for instructions on how to have the carriers/slings repaired.

Carriers/slings with ¼-inch width rings are not included in this recall. (09-05-01)

Congrats on the baby.

Most baby-carriers go up to 20 pounds, don't bother with one that can carry a 30-pound baby (there are a few) because they are way too heavy.

Definately check it out as a stroller because the carrier part, great while it lasts, gets outgrown really quickly. In particular, does the stroller have a good sitting-up position? Several don't. Is it the right height, and can you maneuver it with one hand? It's amazing how often you find yourself holding the kid in one hand and pushing the stroller with the other.

Does the folded stroller fit in your car? Also, not all baby-carriers fit in all cars. But you can usually return it if it doesn't. It won't be used yet. One-handed folding is good. But you'll still need both hands to get the thing into your car. Strange folding methods don't really matter because you get really good at it, whatever it is.

Cup holders and a big basket are a lot more useful than you think they are.

I'd say that little and light are much better than big and heavy.

MTG and I have a travel system made by Evenflo (can't remember the model number) and it has been AWESOME.
We're currently using it with our second child, and the benefits such a stroller affords are numerous.

The one we have folds down to a fairly small unit, easily fitting in our trunk.
It also includes a rear-facing infant car seat that detachs from the stroller, and then snaps into a base unit in the car.
We got a second base unit for our other car for more flexibility.
It also has a VERY smooth ride, which you'll appreciate if your child gets tired or fussy.

It's a GODSEND when on a long shopping trip.
For short trips tho, my wife usually takes the umbrella stroller since it is much less bulky.
However, crossing thresholds or any type of impediment with the umbrella stroller's teeny-tiny wheels is kind of a PITA.

Of course, the fact that my aunt works for Evenflo in OH and was able to purchase it using her employee discount (between 40~50% off) made it even better!

I had one of those stroller and car seat combos, i didn't like it much. The stroller was heavy and i had to replace the carseat before my son turned 1. I recommend getting a car seat that will convert into a toddler car seat, will save you money and you wouldn't worry about changing carseats later on. A good car seat i would recommend would be either a Graco or Evenflo brand. I would recommend a light weight stroller either by Combi or Maclaren. They might be pricy but i think its worth the investment. You should check out BabyDepot at Burlington Coat factory if they have one in your area. Babystyle.com is another good place to look at and also Rightstart.com. I would just look at these places and see where you can get a better deal at. Target is also a good place to look at and definitely BabiesR' Us.:)

Listen to Waggy's advice!
We bought the Eddie Bauer combo as well......probably used the stroller 3 times, it was like trying to steer a tank. The carrier itself weighs close to 40lbs! Well, not quite...but you plop a 7 to 9 lb baby in there and it feels like it does!
